I was intrigued by the post on LRC Forum re. Nick Symmonds planning to run a half marathon this spring as part of his preparation in moving up to 1500m/mile seriously. Nothing odd about that in my view. Please note that on 20 August 1977, Steve Ovett won a half marathon race in Dartford, England, clocking 65:38. He only decided to run the race at the last minute, and had to borrow a pair of racing shoes from his training partner (and later coach) Matt Paterson.
On 3 September that year, Ovett won the inaugural World Cup 1500m title at Dusseldorf, Germany, in the UK record time of 3:34.45. Most impressive, however, was the way he blew the race apart on the last lap, clocking 25.1 for his final 200m, in spite of slowing down and waving to his parents approaching the final metres. John Walker, the reigning Olympic 1500m champion at the time, was so stunned that he ran off the track. You can watch the race on YouTube when you have a spare 5 minutes.
Ovett went on to dominate the world 1500m/mile scene for the next two years.
My point? That half marathon race two weeks before the World Cup was simply part of his preparation.

We all did stupid shite like that back in the day. Imagine what he could have run if he had done 1500 specific training...or just friggin rested on that day.
Nick recently said he's going to concentrate on the 800, not the 1500, because the appearance fees are too good to pass up this year. Still, 13.1 is similar to his normal long run, so this half marathon training run is not news.
He actually turned up to do a long training run and was going to stop at 10.He was running with Barry Watson (who had run the marathon at the Moscow Olympics) and Watson kept asking Ovett if he was going to stop and was he worried about the race in a couple of weeks time. If I recall correctly, Ovett replied something along the lines that he felt it was very easy. He eventually dropped Watson at around ten miles.Given that Ovett was an endurance-based miler who, I think won an Inter-Counties x-country championship at 7 1/2 miles, a 65 and change half probably didn't take a whole lot out of him.

Ovett used to run half marathons. He ran a 1:03 back in the day.
Hopefully someone tells him not to start in last and try to move up half way through.

7 miles maybe 8 at that pace could be considered tempo, but more than that would really be digging in if you are talking about max effort pace for 1 hr.

Why are so many people having such a hard time understanding what coach d wrote? He's not saying run a half-marathon in one hour. He's saying that whatever your tempo pace is for one hour, you can likely run that same pace for a half-marathon without much more effort (obviously doesn't work with slower times). If you can do a 10 mile tempo in one hour it won't take much more out of you to finish the half in 1:18. If you do the hour tempo run at 5:30 pace then you can probably do the half in 1:12.

What like the UK guys do now. He was doing 2 10 mile runs per week in well under 60 and could easily handle it
