CSU basketball coach says XC practices are easy

I played hs basketball. I ran xc in college. It all depends. bb practice is easy one day, hard on others. But, I have put all the star bb players to shame by practicing with them, doing suicides, sprints, shuffle drills. all very tiring. then I ran home 5 miles, just to show them up.

It's a different animal. One exhausts you by sprinting, and the other is tiresome from endurance.

Bottom line, bb players are athletes. Xc runners are not.

That's the point. You can't shift from running to basketball practice or a game for one day and say that because you got sore the latter was harder. If you play basketball at all regularly, and you run, you're not going to have difficulties with soreness like that. Of course, you get sore when doing all sorts of jumping and lateral movements that you have no muscles for. I would play pickup basketball occasionally and run and then half-heartedly try out for basketball teams in junior high and high school a few times. I never had the least difficulty with the running in basketball. I could always sprint up and down the court as long as it took. Little or no basketball skill and too short, though. You want a tough sport for training already in high school? That's wrestling. It was far tougher than any other sport I've ever done. During Christmas week, on each day, you might have to do 750 pushups, 1000 situps, ten insanely steep 150m hill sprints, halfway up the hill sprinting carrying another guy on your back, 1/3 mile circuits with steps, all of this essentially raced, and then hour after hour of practice that is muscle destroying and fierce.

A cross country runner (who has some fast twitch muscles) would be able to keep up with the basketball team (running part and not weights) with two-weeks of practice. He wouldn't be jumping as high though. The slow twitch guys would never be able to catch up.

The basketballer would not be able to keep up with the cross country workout in a year if he was a big guy. He would be slower. A small guard could probably get there in a year or two.

Consider the source. This is the same idiot basketball coach who thought it was a good idea to go drinking with Coeds at Missouri after his Iowa State team got beat by the Tigers. He lost his coaching job over that.

There are quite a few athletes in high school who do XC and BB, so many in fact that basketball coaches don't like it, as they think running cross will hurt the athlete's speed and quickness. We have two such runners on our Womens XC team.

You need to look outside to box, and step back. Most coaches of revenue sports, i.e basketball, football feel they have the best conditioned athletes and have the hardest practices. Most coaches and athletes of these sports also have little or no respect for distance running.....until they try it...at your pace.

Also, they might want to be informed that if you look up GPA for teams, college or high school, 9 out of 10 times the xc and swim teams have the highest GPA for that school.

I actually did go on a computer 5 years ago to prove a point to our AD. It was a slaughter. Most male and females xc teams in college have the highest or second highest team GPA. The AD's sport - soccer, was typically at or below the middle.

Uh, they lost all five starters from last year's NCAA tourney team. On the road, second real game of the season, vs. the #15 team. It's called a rebuilding year.

Maybe it should be repeated. It was a player on the team who was talking about the cross country team, not the coach.
