Allan Wells was the number one sprinter in the world in 1980
nonsense
t&f ranked floyd 1 because of 2 v 1 winning record, including hammering him in zurich, the main circuit meet
He had no need to race the Americans a month after winning the Olympic Lgold medal but he had the balls to front up anyway
he had to or be accused of ducking them & worthless gold
he lost 2 v 1 against floyd
If anything the Americans would have been hell bent on beating Allan Wells and should have been far fresher than Allan
fresher is no way same as giving up on training for a meet they were never going to go to
i highly doubt they had any interest after boycott announced & went thru the motions in training when normally expected to improve for games
floyd ran impressive 10.12 in early july in europe coupla weeks after trials & then 10.28 just 3/7 later when giving up the ghost & didn't bother racing again for 4/52 when he came out with poor 10.22
he wouda been looking for 10.1-basic if he'd trained hard in july
he hadn't
Wells would have been far more cooked from the Olympic 100/200 campaign
nonsense
he had no serious trials as already pre-selected & ran sparingly before games unlike floyd who had to fight in trials, albeit low-key trials with small crowds as boycott long announced
wells had plenty of recovery for post-games
the americans had lost any peak chase at all with floyd slower after 4/52 absence
Yet you come up with she pissweak excuse as to why they were beaten
nonsense
floyd ran 10.12 in europe after trials & 3/7 later ran 10.22 in stockholm, then quitting for 4/52
he had given up on any further peak after meaningless trials & i doubt he expected to face wells that year
You have absolutely no proof of you theories as to why they were beaten. It's pure conjecture
nonsense
it's watching some meets on tv & following most of it in 'papers at the time
FACT is Allan proved himself the best
nonsense
he had losing record
koln :
prelim :
hammered 10.22 v 10.31 against mel
floyd wins other heat in 10.20
things looking bad for wells, but manages to sneak final in 10.19 v 10.21 over a shocked floyd, who went to question photo-judges
it woke him up
just 3/7 later, at meet floyd was presuming to peak for, the biggie of zurich
after winning his prelim, floyd crushed wells
10.19 v 10.30 into a 1.2 !!!
worth 10.13 basic
far faster than wells 10.11 ( +1.3 )pb intrinsic
they both faced each other in brussels & this time wells 3rd
floyd 10.27
mel 10.29
wells 10.31
He trained on speedball, bodyweight exercises and solid old hard work and beat all comers
err...
no
he lost 2 v 1 in finals against floyd including 1 loss v mel in + another bad prelim loss to mel
speedball helped lot there...
That's the end of the story
i have no clue as to what cursory story you have been read
it is utterly bereft of anything informative
this is from guy who read/watched those meets in '80 on tv
In respect to LA in 1984, I wasn't referring to the sprints. There were a number of USA medals won in events traditionally dominated by eastern block countries but try telling the yanks that their medals were ONLY won because the Russians & East Germans were absent. They'd say "No godamn way, we'd have beaten anyone, because we're American"
like men's lj or tj ???
The record books show that Allan Wells was the Olympic champion in 1980
a highly questionable gold especially in light of his hammering in zurich, the main circuit meet of year
AND unlike Carl King Lewis he has never tested positive for a banned substance
laughable
for sudafed a nasal decongestant which contains ephedrine/pseudoephedrine which was bought at a local pharmacy for guys in camp spreading coryza from being in close quarters
Lewis was protected and really should never have been allowed to compete at Seoul as his failed tests were covered up
you really haven't a clue
iaaf/wada did research on pseudoephedrine few years ago & concluded it had no performance enhancement at all & removed it from prohibited list
reinstated back in '10 when in excess concentrations :
Ephedrine and methylephedrine: Prohibited when the concentration of either in urine is greater than 10 micrograms per milliliter
Pseudoephedrine: Prohibited when its concentration in urine is greater than 150 micrograms per milliliter
go dig up his mcg/ml level test results in '88
usatf in their infinite wisdom made great judgement
if King/etc had been stripped of their golds for that pseudoephedrine +ve,
iaaf/wada wouda had to recommend to IOC few years back to quash those results & give back their golds
learn some proper history
Instead of denigrating a great athlete in Allan Wells how about acknowledging what an amazing accomplishment it was. As I said before, this was a guy who hadn't broken 10.7 until he was 24 and embarked on a training formula that took him from an average club athlete to an Olympic champion. That is phenomenal in the sport of sprinting.
err...
fawning over some fairy-tale doesn't change objective analysis
he wasn't the likely winner of gold in moscow if americans had been there
