training run in Chatsworth, CA in August - hot. Run I went on regularly. Was in foothills of San Fernando Valley. Pulled off road to go through an old TV set used in old time cowboy movies - thru a place called Spahn Ranch.
There were a bunch (~20) of biker guys drinking beer with their 'mamas' and generally being rowdy. They catcalled were semi- threatening, a bit but I got thru to the hills beyond them - where I wanted to be. did pick up my pace
Later that evening Sharon Tate, et al. were murdered. Spahn Ranch is where Charles Manson was at - at the time and those who participated in the killings.

I have found money with $1 being the highest, tools, a wallet but the most fascinating find about 8 years ago was a small aluminum cross 1 3/4" in height, 1" wide and 1/8" thick that says: Jesus Christ is Lord. It has been in my wallet ever since. Maybe it's time to carry that cross with me on all my runs and races.

I just entered the running trail at the Woodlands Cemetery near UPenn when I found a Septa worker (there's a trolley stop across the street) spawled out on the grass with a younger lady going down on him. They both looked at me and almost shrugged in indifference before resuming their respective positions.

In college one night I was on a run that included a two-mile stretch on a little-used road bordering a creek/woods area, with streetlights only every hundred yards or so. As I was running through one of the dark areas, I saw something stumbling around in the middle of the street. It was low to the ground, maybe medium-dog size. I stopped. It moved about a yard, then fell. I walked forward, ready to sprint back. It made a loud scratching sound on the asphalt. I edged closer and could finally tell that it was a really big owl, over two feet tall and with huge stretched-out wings, clearly in trouble. I came up behind it and touched its back, and it didn't react. I picked it up with one hand behind its head and ran three miles home carrying it out to the side like I was "flying" it. It held its wings out the whole time. When I got into the campus area, I started seeing people, but no one looked twice. I realized that they must think it was fake. I got home, where I had roommates. No one else was there. I held the owl next to the top of a floor lamp, and it stepped over to the rim of the shade, folded its wings, and just stood there as I called a police help line. I was connected to a "raptor rescue center." I explained the situation to the woman who answered, and she said "Yeah, probably drank some tainted water, we see that a lot. We'll send someone out." While I waited, my roommate Tony came in and started putting things away without even noticing the owl. I said, "Tony, what's that on the lamp?" and he looked. He walked a bit closer and the owl spread out its wings suddenly. Tony yelled "Holy sh-t!!" and jumped back, tripped over the arm of the couch, and rolled onto the floor. As I was trying to stop laughing enough to explain, a raptor-rescue guy arrived, put a little leash on one of the owl's feet, and walked him out to his truck.
I called there two days later and was told that the owl had gotten over its illness and been released into the woods.
Ran partially through a park on some runs. Same girl giving bj's to different men on three different occasions.
It was a summer evening in Eugene in the early 1990s. I was running the bike path along the river and saw a large group of bare-breasted women dancing in Skinner Butte Park with colorful scarves. They continued this for a couple more weeks and I always made sure to time my runs appropriately.
Found a two year old wondering through my parent's neighborhood. Large neighborhood, middle of the day during the week, no phone and noone answering the door to call police. I babysat kid who tried to run away from me multiple times for almost an hour until finally an older retired guy answered his door and told me the area, a few streets over, where he thought the kid lived. This was not the first time the kid ran away apparently. Kid got more scared as we neared his house, thought it was weird, then Dad answered the door, kid took off, no thank you from Dad he chased the boy out into the street and spanked the shit out of him then drug him back inside kicking and screaming. I yelled out, "you're welcome", then completed my run.
I legit found a big purple dildo next to a pair of underwear about a week and a half ago (On the side of the highway that i run on)
A few years ago while running I looked down and saw what I thought was a Butterfinger candy bar still in its wrapper on the ground. Upon closer inspection I see that it actually said "better-than-a-finger" and it was kind of like a leather case with a little snap. So, I pick it up, open it, and what do I find inside? An awesome blue vibrator. So I sprint to catch back up with the team while holding the device in its case in my hand up in the air screaming "HEY I FOUND A VIBRATOR!!!" It was a great moment in my life. I still have it, for nostalgic purposes.
Also I once found a hulk hand on a run and spent the rest of the run punching everybody, that was cool.
If you've ever been to Cape Cod you've probably gone over one of the scenic bridges that connect the Cape to the mainland. There is a nice path beneath the bridges that is great for running. One day my regular group decided to run over the two bridges and make a complete circle, about 10 miles. We had never heard of anyone else having done this. We soon found out why. 90% of the run was completely runner friendly, the other 10% was brutal. There is a good reason that you are not supposed to run under major bridges. I didn't really find anything tangible but I did find out that running in the woods, directly under thousands of cars is a bad idea. I was scared. We could see the bridge swaying.
In Baltimore City (Canton, not "real Baltimore")
1.)Man walking deer (a fawn) on a leash. I passed him along the promenade in Canton, swore it looked like a deer but thought "no way, it's gotta be a greyhound or something". Then I kept looking back and must've been creeping the guy out. The more I looked I was convinced there's no way it could've been a dog. I looped around and ran in his direction again and stopped and said "Don't mean to bother ya, but I have to know...is that a deer?". He answered with a simple "yes", though the look on his face said "what the hell else would you think it is?". I had no idea what to say next so I just asked what it's name was. The guy replied "Bruce", with the same attitude like I was so out of the loop like Bruce was a freakin' local celebrity.
2.)My (stolen) car, driving right by me. I was about 40 minutes into my run. This was the one-time I wish I was one of those toolboxes who carry a cell phone with them on runs. It was 6:30 on a weekday morning and it took me about 10 minutes of running before I even saw another person. Luckily she let me use her phone, and even more luckily, the car was found abandoned at a gas station about 2 miles from where I saw it.
Running by this older guy who is jogging (at least in his late 40s), wearing headphones. As I get closer to him, it appears that he was talking to himself. Right before I pass him, I could tell he was either talking to himself or talking to someone else.
Of all words I hear, "Ejaculating into her panties" as if he was clearly in the middle of a sentence.
Even as a dude, how weird can you get? Clearly this guy had issues and I increased my pace by at least 30 seconds/mile just to get away from him as I had no clue what his daily life involves.
I climb this hill and because the space is crammed, I was doing random paths until I had to go back to campus. Right when I turn around to go down a separate nearby hill, what I thought was a dead buck was really a struggling girl inside a blanket in the middle of the trail. After seeing a clear sign that she was alive, I immediately looked for someone to call 911 from in a nearby residential area. Just as I find someone, another man on his hike finds that same girl (way too visible)
Turned out she had some health issues, was a hospital reject and was just wandering around in fear of something before collapsing.
on a Friday Night run, I am running on the road over this long bridge and what I find are emergency vehicles on the other side of a road. On my way back, it is even sketchier as I see a strong light shining into the creek that the bridge goes over. I ask a pedestrian on the scene what is going on and they were wondering what happened to one of their friends. Next edition of the local news: "Teen commits suicide Friday Night"
Honourable Mentions:
- a couple of dead skunks
- this one is normal to me since I am familiar with the area, but there is this one underpass that connects two trails. CONSTANTLY finding people smoking weed under there.
- LOTS of random "Trail Closed" signs. I tend to ignore them because it really means "Trail not suitable for wheelchairs", but there have been some cases that have forced me to turn around.
- Lots of trail block trees the day after a major windstorm. One of which has at least 20 trees on my route including 10 within a 200m portion.
- not necessarily weird, but on a day with 50 mph gusts, I find an 18 wheeler next to myself at a red light. Because it was towards the direction the wind is coming from, all I could feel running towards the intersection was a heavy crosswind towards my ankles
I think the strangest thing was 2 guys sitting on the back of a maroon caddy that they just parked in the woods, completely blaring and shouting along to The Humpty Dance. Great song, but this was like 6 months ago. It was so out of place it totally threw me off my run. I laughed my a$$ off later but the next two miles I just thought what the..?
