Don't forget Toledo zoo, art museum, and library system is ranked very highly in the states. Odd for south Detroit.

Cleveland Orchestra is one of the Top 5 in the USA. Now there is some REAL sophistication. (Hint: Paying $85 for a $40 bottle of wine at a mid-tier restaurant is slightly more sophisticated than living in a single-wide trailer in the Ozarks.)

Why is this odd? The Detroit area is full of companies stacked with well-paid employees, or the heirs of successful company starters. At one point Oakland County had about the highest income for a well populated (>100,000) county; granted that is not on the south end.

An anachronism dating back to when Cleveland actually had industry and, therefore, cultured people with money. Now they're just propped up by grants, but it is not like they're any good because there is a particularly sophisticated audience for them.

It wouldn't help if Ohio had the finest dining in the world. It would still be a nasty, dreadful and depressing place.
My theory is that 65% of population of such places, don't realize they have a choice as to where they live. So they settle. And deal with it.
The other 35 probably stay there because they have a job or family there.
And they deal with it.
It's best that they stay there. The nice places to live, SD, LA, SF, NY, Bos, are crowded enough.

I could live in a 3500 sq ft palace in Ohio. But then I'd live in Ohio...
California doesn't have wide open spaces??? And this thing we call the beach? You should travel a bit.
The only city I mentioned, where it'd be hard to get some breathing room, would be NYC. But that's the trade off for living in the best city in country, if not world.
