No, let me give you a little summary of my online running forum tendencies:When I ask question about running, I want and appreciate the well-meaning advice that others take the time to give me. I respond in kind.When some schmow starts insulting me, I ditch the running issue and return the blows, with a heavy leaning toward sarcasm, bullshit, dry humor, and most things in between.That means I appreciated the well-meaning advice offered in this thread, took it to heart, will use it in my training, etc. No one wasted their time, unless they just regret giving me advice for whatever reason, in which case, yes, they wasted their time.

If you want to run the marathon do it, just try and be realistic about your time goals. Dont wait until you are completely "ready", because you may not ever be(injuries,etc.)
Take it from an old geezer. I wish i had raced more. I mean, i was never national elite level- just good on the local level. Like most on these board(weather they want to admit it or not). I raced infrequently and tried to wait until i was "ready". Dont go in unprepared, but dont let life pass you by and 3 years from now only have raced 2 marathons.
Very good point. I was thinking this morning that I really don't race very often and should perhaps race a little more frequently. I have the same problem of waiting until I feel "ready," which is frankly never.

I'll just take this time to say that the format at letsrun.com is hard to read, so I'm not sure whether I will ever become a regular poster. Also the focus is weird . . . you guys like to talk a lot about elite runners, drugs, and elite bikers, but rarely discuss your own running goals.
Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome! You can choose to be my friend or my enemy. There is no middle ground on this issue. Choose wisely. :)

I would also suggest training for shorter distances for a while. I see a lot of people that want to do a marathon and think it is the be all end all of running. You should really try to go after the shorter distances like the 5k. But if you have to get that marathon bug out of you, go for it. You have the potential to run under 18 for a 5k. However it get sucked into the repeating marathon cycle every six monthes you won't ever see that 5k time or your true potential in the marathon.

Thanks very much for a serious reply. You and Fred both seem to agree on this idea (i.e., shorter distances). I agree (because they feel more "right" for me) but need to get the marathon "bug" out of my system. I will re-evalate all of my goals in January. I probably will focus on shorter distances after then.
I just wonder: what makes you think I have the potential to run an 18 minute 5K? This is the first I've heard anyone give me a number (no one has made any 5K predictions one way or another). Very exciting because that would be a winning time in my local 5Ks in my age group (maybe even overall). I just never conceived that would be possible. I thought 20 min. 5K would be a huge stretch.
As a side note: My weight has fluctuated somewhat over time . . . was fairly high when I ran my last 5K and achieved my PR. I've lost about 6 pounds since then. Could probably lose 6 more without looking completely anorexic. I would probably have to lose some muscle for that to happen.

Why not focus on the shorter distances now train specifically for those and just run the marathon. I train for the 1500m but also run a half marathon once a year. I ran a 20 mile race twice. I plan to run my first marathon in Sydney this year.
Because I'm not aiming for a fast PR I plan to run about 25% slower than 10K pace. I know such a pace will allow me (and probably most other trained runners) to run the first 20 miles comfortably. For such a pace I can do without high mileage. I run 20-30 miles per week.
I would advice you make sure your training benefits your long term goals and don't waste miles on running just one marathon. Of course you can run as many miles as you want or are able to. Just don't run to many miles especially shortly before running a marathon. You will certainly be able to run a faster marathon after you optimize your speed on the shorter distances.

Girl you are really stupid. I got some swamp land down in Florida I want to sell you. Anybody can tell you anything and you're ready to swallow it whole as long as it sounds halfway serious and it's what you want to hear. You don't even know who these people are and they don't know who you are. Okay in all seriousness I think you can run faster than 18 minutes. If you train real hard you can qualify for the world championships next year. You should at least be ready for the 2008 olympics.
I base that strictly on the times that you are running for the 200s and 400s. I would be careful with your weight. Yes you will run faster if you are lighter. However if you become too light that is much worse. I have seen far too many women end up with stress fractures because they were too concerned about weight.
Let's see, we've got someone who says she's already been running consistent 50, 60 mile weeks and has a fastest 5k of around 23 minutes. Sure she can drop it down to 18! I'm sure all that will take is a boost in milage to about 400 a week! Did you all just fall out of the sky and into the world running sometime last week?
why should she make that kind of improvement? 18 minutes is not exactly a fast time is it?
Ok, so this is 4 pages of posts for a 23 minute 5k runner? Man it's amazing what guys will do for a 0.000001% shot at some action. Very sad.
Overall the woman seems like a self indulgent person. A thread this long doing nothing but talking about herself. What you need is for someone to tell you, "hey, do what you want and figure it out for yourself" The same stuff doesn't work for everyone, you have to figure out what works for you. Hell, people are giving you advice based on estimated times in workouts, pretty shady to me.
I wasn't running that kind of mileage when I ran the 5K. I was ramping from 20 to 50 (while doing speedwork for the first time ever) after several month lay off. Also possibly had anemia (not sure on that one).
I find it strange that people would wonder why I would talk about my own training for several pages (oh, the nerve! and on a running website, no less!), when others can talk about fanny packs or drugged cyclists endlessly.

Talking about your own training is one thing, but this is more like incoherent endless babbling. Running is a personal experiment. Step away from the computer and go to the lab and figure things out for yourself.
