Andres Arroyo Does 6x600m at 4:00 pace to prep for sub 4:00

I was told that he PRed at outdoor nationals in 2012, so I am not sure he is being worked too hard based on past history.

I know it's hard to keep track of the point of an argument on the internet but the point I was responding to was the suggestion that overemphasis on the mile resulted in the American 800m event being deprived of runners who were better suited to being 800m specialists.

Do you want to identify any such runners? If not, not on point.

Also, while it was by no means my intent to minimize the significance of 800m speed for a "great" 1500m runner, the fact is that Matt Centrowitz has had great success without ever breaking 1:47.

Colonial definitely has a very good program. Another of their milers has run 4:24 and there were quite a few others around him in the practice.

The longer rests facilitate the recoveries. Their program looks to be quite good as far as I am concerned.

A) He hasn't been in a fast 1500m this year (he hasn't even raced it this year)

B) The times he's run so far this year

If you look at what he had done before this year, even his 800/mile aren't too far off (1:51/4:11y last year, and focused on 1600/3200 before that).

And pure 800m types usually aren't too good at cross country (see: Nick Symmonds, and even Elijah Greer to an extent). Arroyo has run sub-15 for 5k in cross country and is a multi-time state champion; Greer went under 16 twice, and never under 15:45 and his highest place at state was ninth. I don't even know if Symmonds ever broke 16, though he did win his state XC title in 2001.

So he was focusing on 1600, but ran a better 800 anyway? Sounds a lot like this year.

Running 1600/3200 doesn't mean he's that "type." That's just how HS athletics works, everyone starts out either distance or sprinter and the stars have to earn points for their team in those events.

33rd in the footlocker south regional, according to milesplit. Compared to #6 all time, that sounds like "not too good" to me.

Symmonds isn't a pure 800-type, he's a mile type who chose 800 and succeeded because he's a skilled racer. His 400max is so slow, he has no choice but to even-split all the time.
