he does somehow get it right, although I wouldn't mention the NIC but the fact that they race at a low-key collegiate meet instead of one of the bigger national indoormeets like Milrose.

This is like Kobe Bryant deciding to play a game in the NBA D-league Lakers franchise (although the comparison between track and teamsports are always difficult).

On the other hand: not so long ago you couldn't imagine a bunch of athletes trying to get an outdoor A-standard in the 5k on an indoor track!

Right, this field is "Lomong et al": a multi-Olympian and World Champs participant with a sub 13 who just went to the Olympics this summer and just got 3rd at US Cross despite it not being his event (Teg), an Olympian and American Record holder with a recent 3000 PR of 7:35 (Jager), a guy rapidly improving despite being a HS phenom, who just won US Cross over Ritz and was 4th at the 10,000 US Trials and whose 5000 PR is only 8 seconds slower than Lomong's despite being significantly younger and more strength-oriented (Derrick), a guy who has steadily improved after getting 4th at US Trials 3 years ago and setting a 13:16 5000 PR, who just ran a 7:37 3000 indoor equivalent, who has the strength to get second in US Cross two years ago and the speed to run 3:37 a couple years ago (Bumbi) and a young guy with a devastating kick (Heath - OK, so not a threat to beat Lomong but wanted to give him some props).

Having said all that, I think Lomong will win. Haha.

I'll revise your count. This puts the Schumacher group pretty much on par with other top distance runners in terms of indoor races.

Jager won't finish better than fourth. He doesn't have the winning mentality as some of the other guys. He often ties up the last 100 meters.

Derrick will give Lomong his biggest challenge. I think Derrick could even win.

Bumbalough will be close behind in third. Just ahead of Tegenkamp. Elliott Heath will drop a bit but still run sub 13:20.

Because he runs to win. He is never afraid to be near the leaders. A lot of the other guys simply run within themselves and finish strong without ever contending for the win. At his last race, Jager hung onto to Lagat for long as he possibly could.

This is true. He went with Lagat when Lagat gapped Bumbi and Levins, then died while Bumbi and Levins surged. He might have run 8:13 or 8:12 or something instead of 8:15 if he hadn't gone for the win against Lagat.

Jager runs until he drops. He does not focus on the time or what lap he is on. He locks on to the guy in front and holds on until he can kick for the win or he dies off completely. He has a winning mentality. In the two mile at Millrose Bumbi and Levins realized that they could not stay with Lagat without suffering a miserable death. Jager did not care. He stayed up there as long as he could.

The point is that he always drops. In the NON high school 2 mile, he took the lead way too early and got smoked by Forys and Centrowitz. Jager needs to learn to leave a little more in the tank for the last 200m. The 2 mile at the Armory was awesome though. Definitely respect him for trying to race Lagat when Bumby and Levins dropped early. Hopefully he keeps improving.

Assuming the rabbit does his job, I wouldn't be surprised to see several of these guys in the 13:1x's and perhaps the winner chasing 13:0X. I certainly think Rupp is on another level, but I also think he would be chasing 13:00 so I have to believe these guys can kill 13:20.

I wouldn't be completely shocked if the AR gets a scare but I think both Lagat and Rupp are capable of taking it under 13:00 right now. It's really too bad Rupps 5000 got scrapped, especially after seeing his 3000.

Yeah, I definitely admire Jager's mindset of going for it. He did that in a lot of his steeple races. Sure, sometimes it doesn't work, but it's nice to see a young guy not afraid to mix it up.

Also, I think Bumbi learned his lesson when he went with Rupp at AR pace (Rupp went on to set the record Lagat just broke) and died a brutal death, dropping to like 8:30 or something. Jager, however, seems a little impervious to such lessons, for better or worse.
