On a 300m track you only need be about 55-60s back at those paces to be lapped.
Everyone stepped on to the track with the same rules. You get lapped you're gone. If you're in the front you don't want to be having to pass people who don't belong on the the track with you over and over.
I particularly like the SEC rules where the race actually will pull off even scoring positions and only 5-6 guys might score.
Are there qualifying standards to run in the Big 12 meet? If so and these athletes met them, then it is hardly a “fun run” and they should be allowed to finish the race since they earned the right to be in the meet. Even if there are not standards, most coaches don’t bring their entire roster to a championship meet. Their respective coaches obviously thought they were good enough to be there in the race.
They run prelims to narrow the field down in other events, but the people in the prelims who aren’t good enough to score still get to finish their race. Does that mean it was a “fun run” for the people in the prelim who didn’t advance?

I see. I was reading the posts talking about 400m behind. Yeah, only 300m behind might have had a chance at not too far from 17:00.
They should only be pulled off the track if they are interfering with the leaders in a way that negatively affects them.
If a runner is being lap and is within 2 laps to go for the runner, they won't be pulled.
So, the runners being pulled, are more than just a lap behind by the races end, bc the leader(s) are going to put more distance on them the last two laps if they were(n't) pulled.
I know this from competiting in Big 12's myself, I was so bad, I got lapped twice outdoors. (They don't pull you for outdoors, just for indoors).
And then scored the following year. Lesson: work hard, learn from the race, and go big next year!

You want to do it BEFORE this happens, not afterwards....
Man, if you get lapped in a 5,000 they pull you off the track...man that's crap.
If they can't keep track of the runners, here's what they should do.
Shoot lapped runners with a paintball gun. Torso only. Motivates slower runners to run faster so they aren't shot, and if they are shot, it's easy to identify them.
There is no way such a high % of the people on this board have a problem with/are unfamiliar with this rule...trolls FTW...

Yes, you are required to adjust your strategy if you project to be in 13th or worse around the time the leader is ~40 seconds ahead of you. That's the disadvantage you must deal with by being a "middle of the pack" runner....
I remember a guy on our team, before his conference race, saying his "biggest concern was not being lapped by the defending NCAA XC champ (Ritz)."
Ritz went out like a monster and took a ton of scalps that day...it was kinda cool seeing a wave of slower guys (my biddy included) step off the track in his wake...
