Successful HS miler, sick of being weak, gains 40 lbs and never looks back

He wouldn't need to juice at his age to make that kind of transformation, all he'd need would be clenbuterol and whey protein.

However, looking at those pics, I'd say he just did a moderate first cycle.

Large skeletal muscles does not mean he's healthier. It depends on what his goals are. Can he run a faster 1600 than he could when he was 123 lbs? If not then this post belongs more on a body building site than a running site.

No runners need supplements or special training programs to put on muscle. Just eat at a caloric surplus and lift each muscle group hard twice a week.

Each muscle group twice per week means you will be at the gym pretty much every day. And then get the running in? Not going to work. And you would have to eat like 10,000 calories daily.

6 ft, 123 lbs would look MUCH more skeletal than that before picture. one of the numbers is wrong.

This an ad not a story. As far as 70 mpw, maybe too much for the average HS runner but for the rest of us, a giant step back for American running if we believed this crap.

I was more surprise by the 2nd picture. At 6 feet, that guy would weigh WAY more than 160-something.

i'm 5'11, 145 lbs and i think i'm smaller looking than the "before." does not look 20 lbs lighter than me on a slightly larger frame.

I read a few of the replies trying to pinpoint inconsistencies in the account and suspicious claims in this "fitness transformation". Great detective work, but let me save you some trouble. Guys, this is an advertisement for a muscle building program. Don't fall for it. This is the 21st century equivalent of that ad in Sgt. Rock comic books I read as a kid where the weakling gets sand kicked in his face, subscribes to the Joe Atlas plan, and returns to the beach to the delight of all the bikini-clad girls. I mean, just read the tagline, "see what Reed did to stay the course and show his heckling classmates who was boss!" LOL.

Since when is running 4:43 being a "successful high school miler"?

I don't get what's so impressive? I'm his age, weight and height plus I can run faster.

from the pics he obviously got douchey-er, but how much slower did he get exactly?

Who said I ran because it was good for me?

I don't believe this story for a second. When I weighed 125 I could easily bench 115, that was when I was 15. Two it stated he was state caliber which everything I've seen says otherwise.

Why do people think like this? What are going to do chase down sprinters to exhaustion and cannibalize them?

The weird thing is I heard this mentality in highschool, college, and all over letsrun many times. Why do people think they're going to chase down and eat other people and that running is somehow useful in that regard?

175 and I look much much skinnier than this guy at 6'0 168. How is that?

He's probably 5'10" and about 165. And I don't think he gained 40lbs, he was probably 135 in his other pic.

People love over exaggerating their gains and improvements when in fact, such gains are actually very hard to come by.

I never mentioned cannibalism! Though it may well turn out that way. When the oil runs out, everyone will be starving. Soylent Sprinter will probably be on the menu.

The difference is that Alan Webb actually is somebody. He has an American Record and the 8th fastest mile ever run. The kid who gives up and just hangs out in the gym can spend the next 50 years of his life talking about what might have been.

FWIW I was 143 lbs in HS and ran only slightly faster times, off of 50 to 60 MPW. Got to 2:38 marathon age 22 then serious injuries forced me to quit competing. Took up weights and more power based sports and went to a lean 165 within a year and a half (also 6'0"). 20 years later I was competing as a master and running 2:06/4:20/16:36, sometimes well over 100 mpw, but usually about 50 mpw average.

I looked/look about the same as him (bigger in chest, smaller biceps). Most runners don't realize how much bigger 165 lbs looks when it includes well balanced upper body muscle mass. I still look pretty skinny in baggy clothes, though. I never lifted more than 2 to 3x week, no supplements at all and just ate more (was even vegetarian initially!). I can't believe all the crap that kid says he is taking, must be 100's of $$ a month.

I feel someday the internet will implode. A huge fight will break out between each message board following. Runners, Bodybuilders, Tech-nerds, cyclists, tri-athlete's and sports fan. This will be known as World War Three and result in the end of the world as we know it.

Think Anchorman, but on a much bigger scale.
