You're not listening to what the other poster is saying. People who make less than $70K exist in San Fran, but they just can't purchase a pot to piss in. You can do just fine in San Francisco on less than $70,000. Rent is not that expensive.

No. It is the kind of tripe that is spouted by people who don't want to work to improve their own lives, but choose instead to complain about people who have done so. Any half-decent waiter or bartender is making a living wage. I make $50K/yr at the age of 27 (not getting rich, but certainly a living wage) and I have had none of the three advantages listed.

Exactly. Surviving (and that means paycheck to p-check), and that's about all you'll do in SF on $70K. Sunset District - that's about one step up from the Tenderloin District. No thanks.

That's true but if you work near the Financial District/SOMA that's a hell of a bus trip and parking will run you $300/month if you drive. A decent 1 BR in South Beach will run you $3k and if you have a family and want to live in a "nice" neighborhood I hope you make $200k. East Bay is a great option as the commute can be a lot shorter than Sunset.

In case anyone is taking you serious, that is not the truth. There's nothing wrong with living in Sunset. The commute is not bad at all. It takes like 20-30 minutes to get downtown. Furthermore, having nearly $3000 in disposable income every month is way above just surviving.

So what did you mean by, "You can't even survive on that"?

And are you honestly uncomfortable in the Sunset District? Show me some statistic that says it's anything other than one of the safest parts of a safe city. From what I can find, San Francisco averaged one incident of crime for every 20 residents in 2010, while a city like Detroit had one incident of crime for every 10 residents.

How is it then that most families (even in San Francisco) make far less than $200,000 per year (median family income is around $80,000 per year)? The fact that most people (more than 90%) make considerably less than that, it must therefore be very survivable to live of incomes that are a fraction of $200k/yr.

This is nonsense. Almost all people would quit their jobs pretty quickly after winning the lottery. They don't "love" going to the office for 50 hours per week.

Also your hypothetical question is stupid and beside the point. The problem is that when spoiled kids are fed the do what you love crap through high school and undergrad many of them end up like the OP--struggling to find anything that will pay the bills. That screws them for many years, and as the economy evolves it could be for life.

Sunset District=Hercules. I think most will tell you that's a no go. A comparison to Detroit is.....well, how should I say it, not exactly a comparison that gives me the warm and fuzzies.

The more you talk about the Sunset, the less I think you've been there. We're talking about the Sunset District in San Francisco, right? Where St. Ignatius College Prep is located? You really think Shannon Rowbury is in personal danger everyday she's at home?

For a typical, relatively intelligent young person, by far the easiest way to make "good money" is to work in a professional services field like law, finance, or consulting. If you didn't go to an Ivy undergrad/have connections, it's very difficult to break into finance or consulting unless you go to business school for your MBA.

You seem like a smart enough guy and if your goal is to be making over 100k a year, then get into the best JD or MBA program you can. A 3.6 GPA won't get you into Yale Law and that's just life, but if you do well on the LSAT (170+) and get accepted at a top 10 or even top 15 school then you're set. For MBA they like to see some work experience, so just join the Peace Corps for a couple years...you can see the world and admission committees love that sort of thing, and both law and business schools actually like people with a science background.
