How can elites run 26.2 miles at well under 5 pace and I struggle to run one at that?

I figure Jacking would have to run 15m flat to run 5m mile pace for 10k (31:04). Not 26.2 mind you, but still, i'd be impressed with his genetics. I've always wanted to know how fast Bekele or Geb could run 10k "untrained", maybe sub 34 or sub 35. "untrained" is pretty hard to establish given they ran to school and/or chased cows or soccer balls from sun up to sun down. How quickly would they improve after just one month? How can Wanjiru run sub 29 at age 15? He must have run a lot as a tyke, like that boy from India who ran 48 marathons before age 5.

Jacking, do you have a time for running 10k off "nothing"? How many times had you run when you ran 38? Does anyone have a time off nothing, good or bad?

Somewhat related is that motivation and discipline are also influenced by genetics. If he hangs out with people that are bowing down to him for running only 38, then that probably won't help. He'd probably do better training with folks running much faster.

Jacking? Response?Not knowing his detailed resume I am pretty sure his 38:02 was after just a month or two of him coming to our track workouts and he really did no running at all until he showed up the first time. Impresses me for sure.

There are huge differences between people. We don't normally notice them because we spend life talking about the weather, not running marathons or doing physics, or pondering the imponderables together. Plus, political-correctness forces the nonsense that we are equal on us. I think if you are gifted mentally it's a lonely world for you because no one can even appreciate what's going on in your head. With running at least people can see it and appreciate what it is you do. We have scientifically-verified bias as to our mental abilities. Polls show that 80% of the people think they are above average in IQ... Futher -- the lower your IQ, the higher the error (overestimation) in your estimate of your IQ, while those with the highest IQ tend to be realistic or underestimate their IQ. Interesting thread...

No, they've got it wrong. I really know this guy. His name is Sameer, his parents were from Libya, but he grew up in Lebanon, Ohio. Runs a 5 min mile, too.

Lol, apparently we are! In an everyday going-to-the-supermarket context you would never know it -- THAT's why it is hard to believe. Most real differences come out when CHALLENGED in the extreme especially. There are mental differences like this too -- which is why you do not see too many Afrcans getting degrees in, let alone Nobel Prizes, in physics (like none...). And Puhleeese with the "racism" crap. The Chinese and Japanese have physicists.. even here in good old "racist" USA. HUGE IQ differences are fact people, not to mention motivational and personality differences. It is the same thing with running and sports on average OBVIOUSLY. Lets just say the truth here. We are different. We all have different genes -- cept for twins, and even they have different gene-activatrs and epigenetic switches thrown... that's why we need to look at averages. If someone runs fast from the time they are small, they may flip lifelong genetic switches because they were challenged. Also do not forget that WE as humas CREATE much of our environment out of our genes -- so when environental changes change something in someone THAT'S GENETIC TOO!!! We create cultural feedback loops. A birds nest and a beavers dam and hut are genetic -- as is the bee hive. They FLOW from their genetics and feed back -- like our libraries and universities do for Europeans. Complicated stuff. If you have not guessed it, my field is evolutionary psychology and neuroscience... lol.

I am not sure why you find my antidotal examples so hard to believe. They are true. I am sorry you live in such a small isolated world. Get out and meet people. Life is much more enjoyable when you are immersed.Here is another true one to not believe. Back in my weight training days I maxed out at a lean 136 pounds. At one point I held the world record for most pull-ups without resting. Record lasted about two weeks until some Japanese guy beat it by one efin pull-up. Samar is for real. He was my TA at U of Pittsburgh. Monster strong and real nice guy too. I do remember him telling on many occasions how he could bench more than 300 after only a month or two at the gym. I hit the gym a few times when he in there. Used to literally use all the 45s when he was benching. Not sure where he got all the weights when he was squatting. Squatting. That sounds funny.

But let's get back on subject and talk more about an old lady and fat guy breaking 38.

and to the original question, yes, i ran just under 5 minutes as a freshman in h.s., and went on to run a half marathon at 5 minute/mile pace. 2 years into graduate school.

so much pain, so much suffering went into it.
