why can't they just stick to the qualifying standards? This popularity contest crap is ridiculous- people who don't understand why Fam is angry don't understand the beauty of distance running-you get what you earn- no favoritism, no rich parents handing you success- you earn everything- instances like this spoils everything.

I don't think Webb should get the 5K bid. But at least he qualified for the trials with fair ease.

Fam is on the outside in every way. He's always looking for a handout. He's mooched off others in the past, and even has a donation section on his website to pay for his way to the trials. Now he wants this.

Fam was national-class. He was national champion. Being in the Olympic final makes one world class. You don't have to be contending for the win to be called world class. That would make only a few world class runners in the world. That would be stupid.

What I ran this year:

-Tempo 5k with racing flats on at UNCC dual meet ran around 14:00 1st time racing on the track in a year and a half.

-8:48 steeple App State. NCAA altitude conversion is 7-9 secs. 1st steeple in two years carried the race alone.

-8:38 steeple UNCC meet. Second place finisher about 40 secs lapped entire race -1 runner. Carried the race alone.

-8:39 steeple Duke invite. A barrier was set at women's height so the qualifier wouldn't have counted, finished anyway. Carried the race alone as my pace maker dropped out after 1 lap with injury.

-8:37 steeple Nashville I carried the race/pace from the gun to about 5 laps dragging Ben Bruce and a Kenyan to PBs for this year.

-8:52 in Indy HP meet Asthma attack finished anyway.

Hey fam, don't hate on Webb. You didn't get in the meet, you didn't qualify. Webb did qualify for the meet and has changed events. Your situation is not like webbs so why mention Webb? Worry about yourself. Webb is an American record holder. Webb has far superior PRs than you in every event from 800-10k except for the steeple and if Webb ever chose to run the steeple he would have crushed you in it.

I'd let him in.

Spike is way off. Webb has a two or three second PR over Fam at 10K, and it was in the same race, which I witnessed and photographed from a few feet away at Stanford, 2006. So lets not talk about this "far superior" crap. How bout just admitting that Webb has a name and connections that Fam doesn't? Just be honest. Nike and their agents run the show in Eugene.

Why can't they publish who's in at this point? If I'm reading this right, they have 24 slots open for the 5k and 19 declared and accepted. Webb jumps the list, and if I'm reading this right, pushes Trevor Dunbar out of the competition. I wonder what Dunbar thinks.

i blame fam's agent... it sounds like fam was just personally emailing some address he found online and hoping to get a positive reply whereas webb sounds like he wasn't even involved in the process

I get it. Webb has run very fast times (I'm a fan), but come on. Webb is about the last person in the 5k field who should get picked to make the Olympic team.

Look at Fam and his progression of races coming off injury. 1 second off a standard and he was a 2 time Olympian. If Webb is in, he should be in. Webb was no where close to the 5k standard.

wow what a suprise Sp!kes sticking up for one of Vig's athletes. What did you do introduce Vig to his wife or something? Fam came on here and posted and i agree with him, he should be in the meet. He has done great things and makes things interesting.

I find it a bit amusing that people don't want athletes to be able to get it via backdoor mechanisms, but then want Fam to get into the meet. Fam (as he acknowledged himself) wouldn't get in if they just cut the field of at 24.

Be consistent. If you don't think Webb should have gotten in, then you shouldn't think Fam should get in. Even if Webb already got in.

Personally, I think this demonstrates why the appeals process exists. Webb had a reasonable case to make, and apparently the officials agreed and let him in. Fam also has a reasonable case to make, and hopefully he will also get in.

I do think the process should be more transparent, but it currently isn't and it's not like anything is going to change today. Fam will have to work with the existing system. Hopefully this case will improve things, but we were all saying the same thing years ago when Goucher got in. I don't expect to see anything change after this either.

I wonder if Fam is now realizing the benefits of having an agent. It seems like he is a little bit unclear about how to file an appeal. Since I don't know the facts, it may not be his fault (perhaps the process is confusing). This is what an agent's job is...to make the connections and work the legal/techincal angles to support the athlete.

Anyways, I'd like to see Fam in the meet but it could go either way (just like it could have with Webb).

I raised this issue to specifically point out what is going on in our sport behind the scenes. If an anonymous committee can make a decision like this on such important matters without accountability, then what else is taking place behind the scenes? If USATF can't follow their own rules then why should you follow them? Their rules make them money and cost you money.

It is a window into how logo restrictions and sponsorship restrictions are decided, where important meets are held (Eugene year after year), and how funding and support is given athlete to athlete. If favoritism falls on the side of particular athletes due to influence via corporate funding that feeds the sports governing body, then there is a major conflict of interest regarding all issues on the table in that sport. This affects all of you whether you realize it or not.

I spoke out for all of you when others have cowered away for years. Take it for what its worth.

There may be a young athlete that just missed the trials in the steeple. I would much rather have that young athlete get a spot in the trials than an athlete way past his prime like fam. What's the upside of fam in the meet? He is definitely not the future of our sport. He was great in the past and if he tried to hang on for too long and missed the trials than who cares? He missed the qualification, it's done. Why would we bend rules for a guy holding on way past his prime and not support a kid just entering his prime?

Also, as stated before, this has nuthin to do with Webb. He qualified for the meet.
