If they ran a 58 off of 27-flat pace, wouldn't they have broken 27?

What kind of times was Bekele running prior to the games in previous years? Is this a typical cycle for him?

This time 4 years ago (as in June before Beijing Olympics) Bekele ran 26:25 for 10k.

In May of that year Kipchoge ran 26:54 and in the same race Sihine ran 26:50

These boys took home gold and silver in the 5k and 10k.

Peaking at the right time is just a convenient argument for you to use to stick up for Bekele.

Do I think Bekele will be a medal contender in London? YES

Does he look like a medal contender right now? NO

Also nobody is seriously saying Rupp is a probable medal winner, chance of a medal yes.

He'll be able to run a hell of a lot faster in late July, though he may not run the 5,000 and it would be tactical in any event. Ritz has got to be licking his chops. I'm sure he wishes he was in the race.

Actually they needed 62's so maybe the 48 was with was 6 laps to go.

Look, clownhats, Bekele is most definitely looking like a medal contender assuming that he stays healthy between now and the games.

Rupp has a very outside shot at a medal. Not zero (and therefore quite impressive). But folks coming on here and proclaiming it PROBABLE that Rupp will get silver have been smoking way too much of that funny stuff.

Name two Olympic or WC years where Bekele was handled that easily this soon to the games or WC's.

There was never any such "monkey" on Rupp's back. First, he hasn't made any concerted attempts to get under 13. He just follows his coaches plan, steady progress, and the times will come.

That is probably the first sub 13 by a US born athlete on US soil.

It's interesting that the three white men to have beaten Bekele since his rise to prominence were all in this race: Rupp, Mottram, and Cragg.

Bekele is untouchable when in form. Considering Bekele's recent setbacks, Rupp's success against the Kenster today shouldn't be celebrated too much. At one time Mottram and Cragg had their moment of triumph and look where they finished today...

Agreed on the criticism.

Rupp is past his training curve , he is in a racing mode close to starting a slow taper going into the trials. Today he raced a world class field , ran smart , great finish with a world class time. If makes the team , he will go back into a short training mode to add some strength for the rounds at the games , running two sharpening races prior to games.

Well, I think Rupp is the favorite for silver because of how he handled Bekele today at 5k. My reasoning is that Rupp has an even greater advantage in the 10k since Bekele has been struggling to regain fitness, and it takes longer to build the aerobic fitness for a 10k than it does for a 5k.

If you knew anything about distance running, you would understand that a finish is not necessarily just about what is done in the last lap. analyze the last 5 laps and you will get a better picture.
