LRC Without Anonymous Posts

How about this: people who register will be given notice if LRC receives a request for their IP number. People who do not will not get notice. Users can have the option of only showing registered users when they go on the boards.

Goofy, and entertaining, threads often get deleted. Rather than delete them they should be moved to a special Wild, Wild, West type of folder.

Those who enter the folder would have to click an option that they are doing so at their own risk. "I can hurt myself, if I want to" in other words.

Of course, there are threads, and posts, that are nasty that should get deep-sixed. A lot of deleted threads are not really that horrible. They just need a special home of their own.

Where is this IP address talk coming from? Who is requesting IP addresses? I think I'm missing something here.

My idea: You must register before you can post. All you need to register is an email address. If you have 2 emails you can create 2 accounts, if you have 10 emails create 10 accounts if you want.

This will cut down the amount of shitty posts. Just ban the troll accounts. I'm not saying you should get banned after making one stupid comment. But assuming the forum software gets updated you could look through all posts made under whatever username and if it's an obvious troll account then just delete it. Sure they can come back with another account but it would certainly cut down on the number of people trolling for the sake of it. (I'll admit I'm guilty of this at times)

But the main improvements have already been stated in this thread. Things like having a post history, ability to post pics/ make polls etc.

Basically more modern software would make a massive improvement to this place. In my opinion!

Seems to me like the answer is easy:

- Upgrade the ‘world famous message board’ to include modern functionality (see other posts for details)

- Still allow anonyms posting (even for registered users), but require users to be logged into LRC to access certain new functionality. For example— you must be logged in if you want to upload or view pics. Basically, do your best to encourage users to register, but do not force them.

From a business standpoint, encouraging will have an added benefit of providing LRC with thousands of email address that you can use to generate additional revenue.

Most anybody who's been here awhile doesn't want to see change. It's the noobs who are graduating from Runnersworld or Dyestat who come here, get trolled, and get their panties in a bunch. Nothing worse than a panty-bunched noob.

Some posters believe that the best runners stay away from LRC like it was a plague. Not true. There are very good runners posting here. Real posts and also troll posts. They are just like the rest of the posters: real live people.

Letsrun is like therapy. It's a great place to come for running information. At the same time you can get a belly laugh. You can also scream in annoyance at the ridiculous nonsense being posted.

I think the long time posters have accepted what letsrun is and many cannot stay away. Even if some don't troll, they can troll the trolls. Dropping some "back at you" without anyone being the wiser.

If you actually take the time to read through the discussion, you will see that nobody is propsing a message board "governed by non-anonymity." But I honestly feel that very few people realize the number of tremendous contributions from the icons of the sport that we have missed. A few years ago I asked one of my old mentors (a prominent D-1 coach) if he frequents the LetsRun message boards, and he got a good laugh out of that.

You can essentially remain anonymous with the changes we are proposing. You would need to register your screen name, wait 24 hours to post (or until approved by a mod), etc. If you really want to devote the time and effort towards registering multiple screen names, the opportunity is still there. This type of configuration would drastically reduce the extremely inappropriate comments while leaving virtually all of the productive content intact.

Do the racists and trolls really provide that much revenue to the web domain? I would imagine that they comprise the majority of the people who would be against this type of change!

This comes up once a month. It has never happened and never will happen. Ask yourself why.

Yes, it's primarily true. At the same time, it sounds like you have a rather broad interpretation of "the best runners." I wouldn't doubt it if some of the best runners under 20-years-old made the type of contributions you described.

runningahead has a very active forum..most of the activity is in the user groups..you can be anonymous..or not so anonymous. Also you get the added benefit of the intergrated training log--you can share with the public or keep it hidden. I dont think anonymity is the issue it is the ability to easily post without registering.

It's entertaining to occassionally go through these threads..but the format and the tons of junk threads leaves something to be desired..but yeah there are some gems here and some good running discussion--but there is sooo much other stuff that the good running idscussions get lost in the noise.

It seems like you a limited interpretation of "the best runners." It seems like you refuse to believe very good runners actually post on letsrun.
