THAT Bekele lost the 5000 in Athens in 13:16. The crazy sh!t that Lopez did for 13:11 is up there with what El G did to pull it off.

Lomong last night would've outkicked Bek and El G of 2004, and if he finds himself next to Bek and Farah at the bell with more than 12:15 on the clock he'll outkick them for real.
Pretty big if though, because if I'm either of those guys I'm pushing hard enough to wear Lopez out but still have plenty of my own kick left for a 12:51-57 finish.
Sorry, but I would put a few races above it starting with the 2000 Olympic 10,000 meters. In case anyone has forgotten or the high schoolers are ignorant of it.

I really dont think he would have been close to sub 13:00 in this race without the mistake. His last laps according to TFN were 53.3 and 66.4. He luckily didnt stop completely after the 53 and moved forward. Once he realized, he had about 375m to go and picked it up off a slow jog. He finished in 13:11.63, 11+ seconds off the barrier.
Had his true last lap been 53.3, how fast could have that penultimate lap been? It wouldnt have been 66.4, but how much faster? And then what do you mean by close to sub 13, 1 second off, 4 seconds off? My lame guess is a 60ish penultimate lap for a 13:05.

Let's not forget that Bekele and El G had run a few races each by the time they got to the 5k final. Lomong did this fresh unlike them.

PS Lagat not losing to Lomong at Trials. Have a look at his poor result Birmingham indoors 1500 ( which most of you would think made him vulnerable indoor Nationals.......then look at what he did to Rupp and Lomong. Same in Eugene in late June.

The 5k final in London may end up as THE GREATEST FIELD EVER ASSEMBLED. Making it into that race would be a huge accomplishment for Lomong. Medaling would make him one of the best ever (certainly among Americans).

The toughest thing for Lomong is that he has to decide one race or the other. He can't double the 1500/5k. Lomong is awesome. This race was epic. Just don't get carried away.

The race was a debacle.
I just remembered where I first saw somebody pull a "Lomong." At the 2005 Indiana Track and Field State Championships, Tim Sirbek of Hammond Morton High School made his move in the 3200 race with 900 meters to go. Over the next lap, he built a massive lead on the field and we were chattering if was going to break 9 minutes for the 3200. At the of the next-to-last lap, he put his hands up in victory, slowed down, inspired laughs in the crowd, looked at the official, realized what he did, and began jogging around the curve. He stubbled along for the next 150 meters, but regained enough energy to run about a 70- to 75-second last lap, finish in 9:08 and still win by 6 seconds. I think he ended up doing well in D2 for University of Southern Indiana.
I know they are Kenyan and don't get a lot of love because of that. But Kevin Chelimo and Sally Kipyego had a great husband wife duo at the Meet as well. 14:46 and 13:13.. That ain't bad no matter where you hail from.
I don't know where you got those splits from. I had 53 and then 66 for last lap.
