Olympic Marathon Trials Will Not Be Streamed Online Live

I would be interested in knowing how many people watched the race online and on tv four years ago. Is it cost effective to even do it? I am a big fan of watching marathons online, but is this the reason? If they are getting 2 hours of coverage on national television, is that better?

What does having a life outside running have to do with this? That you can watch live at 7 a.m. Central but not in the afternoon? I bet if it was LIVE in the afternoon, you suddenly wouldn't have as many family and work obligations...and who works a serious job on a Saturday? That's why you charge for the online piece. I'm not suggesting the do it for free (Though the did in 2008) or they find a sponsor for the online race. Charging would reduce the chance you'd lose any viewers. Do you honestly think have a wrap-up later in the day..after the winners are crowned...and everyone knows won't cost views. Please no one is that stupid.

So the cost is a couple commentators and you can be damn sure the wrap-up show will have commentators or announces. We know who you work for...and it ain't the running community.

Surprised by Wejos attitude. I mean as Rojo says, if you really want to see the race get your butt to Houston.

I\'m outraged that I just found out about this. Simply awful. The afternoon coverage is going to be horrible.

Why the hell not put it on live on the newly created NBC Sports Channel(formerly Versus) and then provide the fluffed up recap later?

Has anyone started to organize a boycott of the NBC rebroadcast? That would be one way to get their attention. The "condensed package" will start 30 minutes before an NFL playoff game so it is safe to assume that only die hard runners will be watching the marathon at that time. If the running community organizes a boycott perhaps NBC will realize they will have no audience at all.

They want to TELL you what to watch.

NBC has never, and never will have good coverage of distance running events.

Don't waste your time trying to get them to do what you want.

Actually, that's exactly what Rojo was saying. And what a ridiculous thing to say it was. Maybe I should just take the time off of work, book a flight and hotel at the last minute and tell my family that they're on their own for a few days while I "get my butt in Houston" - that quote still makes me laugh by the way.

So is this what it has come down to for Rojo? Drawing a line that separates the "hardcore" fans from everyone else, defined by those who have the time, money, and freedom to drop everything and cross two time zones to watch something that's being filmed and deliberately NOT shown live. The Brojos should be furious over this, but they're not. NBC doesn't want to take a two and a half hour slot to show the races because nobody watches, but they don't promote running broadcasts anyway. Why would expect to get viewers if you don't publicize that the event is being shown? This isn't just for this event - any running broadcast that NBC gets its hands on turns to dogs hit. That anyone is defending the actions of NBC on this is maddening.

Why in the world does NBC have the rights to something they don't care about? Did USATF grant them the right or was it the USOC? It reminds me of when Pepsi bought out the independent soda bottler in my town in the 1970s. Pepsi killed the local brand, which was loved throughout the state, just to eliminate a competitor. NBC buying the rights to the trials only to not show them live stinks of anti-competition.

Come race morning I'll log into letsrun messageboard to follow the race.

Maybe I'll visit my friend across the pond this summer to see the marathon from the street because NBC surely isn't going to show it.

Anyone know if NBC will have the full coverage on Universal Sports after the delayed coverage on TV? At least we can watch the full races and key moments that way.

the other sad thing about not having a live broadcast is not having the LRC message board comments to read during the race.

some bozo would no doubt reveal the results when the delayed broadcast happens. Just to be evil.

Being a little dramatic don't you think. Obviously, NBC cares about it some, they're devoting 2 hours of coverage to it. They don't care about it as much as people on letsrun, but that's understandable.

And your anti-competition comparison is ridiculous. Who is the competitor NBC is trying to kill off?
