Go for it. If you try to go sub 2:20 and don't achieve it, so what. Maybe you end up with a 2:21 PR and faster than 95% of everyone else that runs marathons.
Why did you say 95% ???? Surely, you don't a 2:20 marathon is at the 95 percentile for all runners...do you???? FWIW, it's way above 99.9 percentile.
Here's a question:
- Have you run a 16:30 5K yet?
- If so, were you tired afterwards?
- Do you think you could run this back to back eight and a half times?
If the discussion is about whether it's a good idea to train as a club-style runner in college, then give it a try and find out! It's probably not a bad idea IF you know what you're doing on the track. Most high school runners don't.
If anyone thinks they can predict how you'll respond to 2:20 marathon training (100 miles/week) then they're full of crap. As are people who think 2:20 is "slow." 2:20 is extremely fast - maybe not on the world or national elite marathon stage, but in real life for people with jobs, responsibilities, etc.
