Watch it again. Lagat lets up before the finish when he realizes he doesn't have enough track to catch Farah. No-one can know for sure what would have happened if Merga hadn't shoved Lagat wide, but there's definitely a pretty good chance he would have caught Farah.
IAAF website live blog posted this about one hour after the race: "Track referee has disqualified bronze medalist Merga for running inside his lane for 10-15m"
Merga as they say, is a competitor.
His behavior is good for rugby, hockey, water polo.
On the track, however he should be BANNED a year for repeat offenses.

This is pure speculation. Though Merga's DQ is well deserved, it is comment like this from Lagat that he is not one of my favorite runners. He lost to Mo a while back. He was like 5m back. What made he think he could absolutely be sure he could get Mo.
Nobody in the world would know. So, anything like this is just pure rubbish.

Lagat hardly lost anything with the contact with Merga.
Watch the video, his distance from Farah and the other runners in between. It hardly changed an iota with the contact with Merga. Getting shoved sideways does not change your momentum that much going forward. Lagat didn't break anywhere. He didn't lose any strides. There is no way he would lose 15 meters!!! That is nuts. He lost the race, and he only ran what, 13:23?
