Merga has run both 5000 and 10000 far faster than Rupp and I think you can expect him ready to perform at his best, which he wasn't the time when Rupp won.

If he takes a medal in this race, he will have come full circle from HS. And he can claim times that runners in the 70's did not think possible, even though they pretended that were special in their time, regardless of their propensity to draw on the available "technology".

it's tough out there. in the 10k, you have presumably three kenyans, three ethiopians, including bekele, at least one eritrean, maybe kipsiro of uganda as well, and farah (plus teg, if he's had a solid block of healthy training since usa's (did he race in europe at all?)). and in the 5k, you have lagat in place of bekele. teg was a better lean or a slightly earlier push away from bronze in 07 at 5k and rupp is at teg's best level now arguably. rupp showed something in that race behind farah. but he's going to be pushed again and have to withstand that and he'll need a clean ride and some disappointing performances around him to do it. Sorry to see Solinsky out. Lagat's a lock for a medal in the 5k, though, and maybe he'll have Farah's number this time.

In other words Birmingham wasn't Merga-certified. Okay, maybe you are right. But there is also the fact that Farah is 1st on the form chart. Yes Farah has shown he is clearly a notch above Rupp but not by a whole lot. Anybody who thinks Rupp has no chance to medal has to disagree with Farah being at #1. I'm not taking sides with the OP. I'm just saying the form chart is lame.

Farah DESTROYS Rupp EVERY SINGLE TIME as soon as the real racing starts. How is this not obvious to everyone?

Galen Rupp is a great runner but, realistically, his best chance for a medal in Daegu would have been if they let him run a leg in the heats of the 4 x 400.
