Those names aren't ugly, they are just unfamiliar. If this was 1911 you guys would probably think Edna and Henrietta were beautiful names.
One thing I think is weird is how boys names can become girl names (Sydney, Ashley, "Sam" for Samantha, etc.) but girl names never become boy names. I mean, when was the last time you met a guy named Sarah or Karen?
True. I'm sure there are a few exceptions. There are also some names which may have started as men's names but are now generally more commonly regarded as women's names. One which comes to mind is Marion. Marion Jones, for example. And: John Wayne's birth name.
As to your first point, some of these names sound ugly because there are 'ugly' words that sound similar:

Maggie and Emma are pretty names, and I'd bet that if I met a nice Helga or Gretchen, my idea would change on those.
The main problems come with overuse. I know way too many Ashly, Ashley and, yes, even Ashe Leigh's. I know too many Kristens. I know way too many Jessicas. To me, those are just too common.
It's really more about the person. My least favorite name used to be Kate, mostly due to a girl in my class who was offensive (in many ways). Now it's one of my favorite girl names.
Since June 1 this year, Caitlyn. It has now become the name for confused old men.

I need to add something to this before you guys beat me to it. Kate is going to be TERRIBLY overused over the next 10-20 years due to Kate Middleton. And so will George for boys and whatever that new baby is named. Good thing American royalty (celebs) name their kids ridiculous things like Apple and North West... It takes away some of the negatives associated with having a celebrity choose your name.
I read recently that around 10 years ago, the name Aiden (for boys) skyrocketed from being rather rare to one of the most popular names. It was due to the character on Sex in the City. Imagine if you'd named your son Aiden after his great-grandfather five years before that season of the show. You'd be so pissed!!!
