I have written nothing to imply that Squires was NOT a great coach. He likely was. However, intelligence dictates that we acknowledge that you might not have much footspeed and yet you may possess a preponderance of slow-twitch oxidative muscle fibers which will permit you to, if you train for endurance with enough intensity, achieve great things in long distance events. Rodgers and Beardsley did not look like great talents coming out of high school. I agree with this, but the truth is that they were NEVER going to medal at 10,000 on the track at the Olympics, but they possessed superb capacity to absorb high mileage and were light on their feet which permitted tremendous success in the marathon.
