That's an awful lot like what Groves did for us in the late 70's, although the Wednesday session wasn't quite as fast as 800 pace. And you had to throw in the "15" mile mountain runs on the weekend, which he apparently did just to keep us honest on Saturday night. (That was the only failure of his program!)

And If aerobic capacity is all that your running performance relies on, then Michael Phelps could run a marathon in 1:45.......

One of these exercise science types is one of my best friends and the struggles that the original poster is going through is basically a weekly argument for me. That being said I do not mean to redirect this thread, but this kind of statement seriously under appreciates Phelp's sprinting ability (swimming wise) and his swimming technique (watch his flip turn compared to the world's best). He is not a distance swimmer you know.

Different biomechanic. But even short striding runners need a longer stride to go faster.
And your Michael Phelps/aerobic capacity idea is wrong too.
The top athletes don't have superior aerobic capacity per se. There is a lot more to it than that.
