What current members of the UD team are good enough to expect scholarships on their D-1 transfers?

Competing well is a factor, sure. But it's not like if Stanford or Oregon or OK State XC/TF teams started sucking for a decade that the AD would go and CUT the teams in dissapointment and frustration. The AD would fire the coach, retain the team, hire a new coach and hope for the best while monitoring progress. That is the proper route. Not just giving up and doing away with the entire program. Granted, I agree the team kind of sucks. There are many DII, III, NAIA programs that are far better.

Andy Weaver ran a partial-scholarship worthy race at regionals and George Vernon was better than him at points early in their Delaware Careers. So both of them might get some money at another program.

Thanks for bringing up those official criteria. Since you brought it up, let's take a look at another UD sport that has been completely safe, as far as anyone knows: Men's soccer.

2010: 4th place, CAA.

2009: 8th

2008: 12th

2007: 9th

2006: 9th

And so on. Soccer's roster is also 28 people and they have 4 trainers, implying a greater than 2x expense than men's XC this year (12 man roster). They better be a really, really diverse team with some damn good donors for UD to justify keeping them around.

There are no members on the current XC team that could get a scholarship at a decent D1 school.

In fact there have only been maybe 2 or 3 guys good enough on the regional level in the past decade that could score money at another school.

BWest,SEC,BEast,CSUs,B12,SUNYs,B10,MWC,Non-CA-P10,etc. are well known public U's with open admissions critera for everyone with the Football and Basketball teams foremost in their minds.

For those that don't know it already, those conferences/systems get most of their dollars from alumni & boosters of Football & M&W Basketball.

Thus, admissions are watered down for every applicant to let FB/BB preps sneak in.

Realize that above list represents 95% of DI-A.

Considering that very few schools give full scholarships, do you think that 24th at regionals by Weaver is not going to get a little money at one of the many schools that he would have scored for this year??

Know a little about the team before you post. One guy has gone sub 25 for 8k and recently 14:42 for indoor 5k. 800 guy ran 1:51 last year. Not a ton that would get scholarships but the team isn't a bunch of jokers either. Although whoever posted about George Vernon must be a complete moron, either that or a former teammate with a huge man crush

You know this includes track too right? I mean I know this is a distance-oriented forum but you should probably check the track roster too. Our throwers are pretty good and are coached by this badass:

I do know that the track team is a lot more upkeep and cost to the school because the roster is a lot bigger and recognize that as a legitimate reason to consider cutting it, but when asked about this the AD used the following reasoning: "Not all the CAA schools have a track/XC team, it's not unheard of to cut those programs...[when asked why football has such a 103-man roster, even though only 54 can suit up] Well, the national average is somewhere over 100 so we have to keep up with that." So basically, instead of recognizing that Title IX has outlived its usefulness and is now being used to discriminate against male athletes (literally the exact opposite of what it was designed to do), the athletic department rolls over and takes it by just doing whatever they see everyone else doing.

vernon ran one race last year, a 14:39 to beat every guy on UD, including chris bourke who had some respect on the regional level.

What's Vernon's GPA? Can someone remind me? Remember, grades are an important part of a scholarship(athletic or not).

I bet Mason picks up all the guys that are eligible to transfer... not a bad idea since Andy Gerard is one of if not THE best coaches in the country.

Bourke was respected at the conference/IC4A level... kind of.

bourke was 16th at regionals in 09, that pretty damn respectable in my eyes.

There are so many ways to demonstrate with Title IX that it is complete garbage to cut a low cost men's program. I am proud to say that I competed against the Delaware program in cross and track and to think that they are being shafted like this is disgusting. I think you guys should talk to an alumnus who is a lawyer or in accounting. Scream out loud and talk to the media. You owe your AD absolutely nothing. Your department is taking the easy way out.
