true, it's one distance and a long one at that, but unlike track, the xc runners on any given team are pretty much doing the same training, the same workouts, maybe some differences in mileage. And put them all into one race and see what happens. In my view, the results wouldn't change much between as little as maybe 3k or 4k and 10k.

Mechseso ran 28:20 2 or 3 years ago while a "freshman" at LSU. He has really just got back on his own path, rather than "gaining" on Derrick/German.

It's hard not to give Derrick the edge, as he's had more consistent training overall, even with his injury last winter. However, German did beat Derrick at World Jr XC after missing several weeks of hard training trying to avoid a hairline stress fracture that kept him out of indoor nats and other races that season. It's certainly a possibility, which will make the race exciting.
I'm a fan of other runners their age too -- Puskedra, Mecheso, Lowe, and don't forget Estrada. None of them are chopped liver, and are all capable of a top 5 finish. From what I can tell, all of them have had some challenges the past two years.
I do think German has the most talent, but being injury prone could definitely prevent him from reaching full potential. Either way, I fully expect nearly all of this group to be doing even greater things between next week and 2012.

What I don't like is that with all of the 8k races run early in the year, the Men jump up 2k for Regionals and Nats. That can completely change which teams will do well. I realize that coaches plan ahead for this jump in distance, but 2 extra kilometers can be enough to drop some talented, but shorter distance, guys into the middle of the pack. Like whoever mentioned how AJ could be better but focuses on shorter stuff...he's a prime example.
Two reasons to keep it as is. First, 10km now is like 8km earlier in the year because the higher fitness level allows guys to go longer. Second, doing 10km beats you up more, so saving it until Regionals is wise. Note that Indiana has not run particularly well since the Chile Pepper with its 10km (too long early with some miler types).
Also, it is harder to get 10km courses than 8kms.
