OP you need to grow up. If you put too much pressure on your son now, he will hate you for it at some point down the road. Let him enjoy being young and find his own path.

son, you're no inigo montoya. inigo montoya dedicated his entire life to avenging his father's death, not being a wimp who does things only if they're 'fun.'
Cathat - you are making a mistake if your are reliving your HS and college days through your son. Why on earth would you be bummed? He isn't you. If you keep putting your own expectations in running on him, I can easily see a distance developing between you two. And why not.
7th grade is pretty early.
I agree you don't want to live through your kids. At the same time, I wonder what the right way to share your knowledge with your kid is. Say your kid runs in high school and becomes pretty talented. Say he just runs XC and doens't run year round. He may never see how good he could become and how much he would enjoy the sport. That was my situation.
It was kind of a fluke thing that before my senior year I ran more over the summer. Without that I wouldn't have had the progress I had my senior year, I wouldn't have thought of ever trying to run in college and I would have missed out on something that has brought a lot of joy to me. So I guess the question is, if you know something that might be beneficial to your kid how to you give him that advice without being a tennis dad.
Perhaps the parent isn't the best one to give the advice. But I wish someone had really sat me down and said, "Hey you could be a pretty good runner if you just ran a little bit more." I thought I worked hard but really had no clue. I just didn't understand how the sport worked. I could do what I want with this advice but wish I kind of knew how things worked better.
