I favor the 21 minute tempo myself. That way I know I am outworking my competitors, and on race day, the additional time spent training gives me a mental and physical advantage.

I haven't been following the discussion fully but am getting up-to-speed. I will say that Roger seems right about you. He said you didn't site your sources. Do you respond by citing sources? No, you say he has no idea. I see that you mentioned names of researchers you've studied so you have that (which is good) but what about more thorough citations? And your general attitude is very condescending and arrogant, as he said before. You don't deny it, as you just say he deserves it. Deserves it for requesting academic honesty from you? But you probably know that you don't provide that and that you are arrogant. So as long as you're willing to admit that you're a prick it's okay.

If you want to make a contentious point in a specific thread, cite a source in that thread. That's what an academic would do. It's courteous and people will pay more attention to you. Why should people have to trawl hundreds of your previous posts?
It's also pretty easy. Just keep a list of links to your favourite 20 research papers.
see i think one of the main purposes of a tempo run is to learn to focus for a long period of time, if you split it up you're losing that.

Actually your 40 min pace is not necessarily a lot slower than your 20min pace at this sort of effort.
Fat metabolism requires more oxygen to create ATP than glucose. If you are already having trouble with energy demands and having to create lactate due to not enough O2, how would you be able to metabolize fat without needing to produce Lactate? You need NAD+ in order to metabolize fatty acids, which would require pyruvate to be converted into lactate or go through TCA cycle, which cannot happen if you do not have O2.
Would you care to elaborate? Because this does not make any sense to me.

The word "Tempo" means absolutely nothing. People that use it are idiots. It means nothing to running or it means everything. Tempo does not explain what intesity you are running. Most of you use it as a replacement to Lactate threshold. Just use the proper term from now on please.

So by definition, tempo is not a specific pace or intensity, but simply the pace itself.Lactate Threshold pace/intensity always seemed too limiting to me. I always think of "tempo" as a synonym for "rhythm". A good tempo run means finding a comfortable, fast, rhythm that you can maintain, for the length of your workout. Rather than looking at your watch, heartrate, or speedometer, find the right rhythm, or even better, let the speed find you.This seems to fit better for me, and cover a wider range of workouts designed to build stamina.
