Name College Runners who have gone sub3:40/4:00(1500/mile), 1:50, AND 14:00 5k

Stephen Pifer ran 1:49, 3:38a, 3:59i and 13:39 while at CU.

I'm pretty sure one of my college teammates ran under all of those times. Kevin Sullivan had some pretty decent range. The only question mark would be the 5K while he was in college. The only reason I wonder about that is because he only ran it at the Big Ten meet to score points for the team. Maybe he can let us know what his college PR was for the 5K. I know that he could go sub 1:50 and sub 3:40 in his sleep.

Jim Hill ran 3:37, 13:19, and 27:55 in 1983 while at Oregon.

Don't know his 800 meter best however.

Kevin Sullivan should get special mention for his 800-Cross Country range. He had a stellar career at the NCAA cross championships, I believe finishing second once.

Nate Brannen ran 1:46 flat outdoors and 3:55.11i at Notre Dame. He lists his 5K PR as 13:47 but that appears to be post-collegiate. Nick Willis holds the UM outdoor record in the 5K with a ridiculous 13:27. The indoor record in the 5K? Another pretty good runner, Greg Meyer with a 13:41i in 1978. Meyer also broke 4:00 after college and of course was not a bad marathoner. Sullivan has been mentioned already. I don't know his 5K or 10K times from college, but he certainly ran well in X-C.

Tommy Fulton, Texas Southern, NAIA, ran the 880, mile, 3 mile, and 6 mile in the 1973 champs and came in first or second in each one.

His 3 mile time was around 13:33, not sure if he ever ran a 5000 fresh or at all. He was always doubling, tripling, and even quadrupling.

There was a thread here awhile back and Malmo was praising Fulton.

Good point. For some reason, I was weighting the 800 as worth more than the 10k. Rupp wins by a bit on the 5k, and Willis wins by a quite a bit on the 1500. Hard to compare, but I'd say that Rupp's collegiate 10k is slightly better than Willis' collegiate 800.

Other than that, I'm not sure. Cragg never popped a fast 800 that I know of. I wonder how some of the Stanford guys of 5-10 years ago would have fared in the 800/1500/mile/5k category.

Well what does an Olympic medal do for you in this competition, not to mention are you only looking at the times from college or are post colleate times in play. Also I think Webb has run most of the times aswell.

You can't list Ryan Gregson PRs at 20yrs old. We could do that with Alan Webb and he would basically have everything.

13:48 / 3:40 / 1:48 (relay leg) across three straight weekends.

I'm pretty sure Dan Brown (stewart's army team mate) did the same thing a few years later.

Obviously Webb gets "penalized" for only staying in college for a year, and Willis also left college a year early. But part of the point of comparing them vs. Rupp *in college* is that competing collegiately is completely different from running professionally. Forget about academics. Just competition schedules alone are enough to make the difference. Guys in college are hurt here by getting overraced, not having many chances at 10K on the track, etc. On the other hand, they're more likely to take a shot or two at a distance other than their specialty, either as speed work (800m for Rupp) or to get conference meet points (5K for Willis, Sullivan, et al.). I think we should also exclude European or other non-collegiate competitions while in college, if we aren't already. Fun stuff.

What about Bill McChesney? Though I'm not sure on the 1,500, don't think he ran many of them.

Believe it or not, Rono doesn't make this list. I think his best official mile was 4:00 -- I saw it indoors.

Would Alan Webb even qualify on these lists because I know his high school times were faster than college. He'll be up in there when I put the pro thread soon. Right now it looks like Willis is the top dog on these ranges so far.

As posted above, Chapa ran 28;32 in HS. Pretty sure he ran under 1;50 in a dual meet or possibly PAC 10.McChesney ran 3;59, 13;14 and 27;50 as a duck.I thought Rono ran under four as part of a mile/3 mile double while at WSU.
