then you probably should find some non-medically corrupt message board to where you can share your superior knowledge so that all of those diabetics who have been shooting themselves with insulin their whole lives can just eat their way to health.

This is very interesting reading, it inspired me to call my Dr.'s office and ask about T3 and T4. I'm going to go in and get that tested, too. I am going to Brownsville, TX next week and have the opportunity to go across the border to purchase some medication, so I was thinking about increasing my dosage. I asked my Dr. what would be the side effects of overmedicating with the Synthroid and he said it could cause Osteopeorosis. Anyone know about this?
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder. My body is attacking itself. Taking synthroid helps to stop or lessen the autommune response. In theory, it could continue to be attacked by my own anti-bodies. Time will tell. The thyroid medication did not cause this.
Say what you want, I will continue w/ my hormone replacement (which is a natural hormone, not a man made drug.) I was toughing it out for years - eating right, taking supplemets (yes, omega 3 omega 6). It took me awhile to get to this spot to feel that taking it is ok. The fact that I am not feeling like I want to jump off a bridge is enough evidence for me.
As far as physical symptoms related to running, I have felt similar problems that the previous poster. Feeling flat, difficulties w/leg lift, and hamstring problems that came up (I had never had any muscle problems in the past). Overall sluggishness. I would feel great one day, then very flat and slow the next. I was training a lot, and not losing any weight.
On the synthroid, I have more days w/ a spring in my step and recovery seems quicker. I have more energy as well. Getting off the couch is not a problem.
This has been a controversy but i haven't seen a study that didn't focus just on older women because that is the standard population at risk for hypothyroidism. Doing alot of weight bearing activity would be a strong negative risk factors for osteoporsis. I was off the charts in the postive way on a recent bone density test at a health fare. So i'm not convinced that this association would be found in an active population.

What i've found so far it talking with doctors is that they are very knowledgeable about the T3/T4 debate but they kind of stumble when i show them the T3 decreases with increase exercise graph... The only one who told me "if you increase your exercise, you need to increase your T3" was a doc who worked with professional cyclists in europe. But he also said this was based on his experience and feedback from athletes and not from any evidence based research.
So, I'd be interested in hearing what he has to say about increased T3 in hypothyroid endurance runners. so please pass on any feedback he has.
My assumption is the incentive for research on endurance athletes and thyroid disorders is scant since the pool is so small. Docs (and funding for research) are most interested in studying more general populations. Finding good research is tough, because there probably isnt much more than what is based on theory.

I was feeling fine when I went to see my doctor two weeks ago, he decided to experiment to see what would happen if he cut out my T3 completely and leave me on just T4. Well, after 10 days I bombed completely. After a few more days of dragging through the mud I called him up to tell him I needed to go back on the T3 which he agreed with and a day later I felt things getting clearer and the energy coming back. Anyway, he was telling me from the 25 years experience he has of treating sub clinical cases that a large dose of T3 will give a short term boost but it always leads to a crash. His experience is that T3 is necessary but in smaller doses.
What dose of T4 and T3 are you on now?
I went back on T3 last week after a complete meltdown. I'm feeling better on the mental/motivation side but i think it's going to take a bit longer to get the physical part back. but, i don't think i caught it till i was really in the hole so if you caught it sooner you may have better effects sooner.
the doc i talked to about T3 also mentioned increasing the dose only a little bit. i can't imagine that a big dose would be a good thing cause you don't want dramatic changes in hormone levels.
oh, don't take it before your thyroid tests...i did this once and it showed i was too high on T3 and based on the fact that i had no symptoms of hypERthyroidism, i suspect it was a false positive test. i talked to a peds endocriniologist who said that indeed, if you take cytomel before your test, you increase the chance of a false positive.

Was immediately referred to an endocrinologist. No wonder I suck at running right now. At least now maybe I can get my meds right.
It can depends on the lab who does the test and the units it's measured in. For example, the website runnerbabe showed has the norms for t3 being between 80-220. the lab where my blood is done shows the Free T3 as normal from 210-440.

I did, but forgot the result. My Doc is faxing me the complete results on Monday.

just wondered if you've noticed any changes after being back on the t3.
i've been back on t3 for 2.5 weeks and i'm finally starting to get some subtle improvement in the ham problems. i'm also starting to finally get a training effect in my cycling. i'd started biking cause of my hams but every ride seemed like my first for the past month. i feel like i can push it a bit now.

great to hear that you are doing better. i can also report significant improvements now that i have been on t3 for the past week. i feel pretty good but definitely not jumping out of my skin... yet. i hope that will happen in another week. right now i am taking 250 mcg synthroid and 3 mcg of t3. let's keep each other posted on how things are going.

that's great...like you, the first week i started feeling less exhausted - nothing earth shattering but i'm less cranky, negative, and i don't feel like working out is an added poison. but i think recovery from muscle damage takes longer. i'm hoping to speed it up by sticking with more biking and not pounding my legs. you're on a big dose. i'm on a weenie .75 mcg levoxyl and .012 cytomel. i'm going to stick with this for about 6 weeks to see how this combo works.

i'm pushing this topic cause i work in medical research. i have no expertise in endocrinology but write poposals on a variety of topics. i think i have enough literature to write a study proposal to get normative tsh, t3 and t4 data on endurance athletes who are hypothyroid and have been on a the same synthoid dose for several months. i could show it to a couple of docs to see if they think i'm crazy or if i've got something work looking at. the studies on the T3/t4 debate make this a time when it might fly. anecdotal evidence of runners results would be interesting.
Yet another male thyroid condition.
I had a PR of about 15:30 for 5K, then all of sudden I ran a bunch of terrible races. The breaking point was when I ran a 17:12 on an easy road course. I went to the doctor, they said there was nothing wrong with me, maybe allergies and I convinced them to do some blood work for the heck of it. Found a thyroid condition, then went on to make the Olympic Trials in the Marathon and had my best year ever (2002). I would said thyroid conditions are more common in women, but some men do have them and it is very heriditary. Good luck, get the test, and get the meds if you need them.

I just realized the numbers I gave you for my t3 and t4 are incorrect. Right now I am taking 250mcg of synthroid a week which is about 35mcg a day (I take a half pill 4 days a week) and I am taking .3mcg of T3 per day.
I have been on this for the past 10 days and I don't feel too good at all. I was previously on .25mcg of thyroid exract for my T3 and felt much better, it's the same amount of t3 but the last week has been terrible, I am waiting to see if perhpas I just have a low level virus or something else that may be causing this instead of the change of medication. It's a drag changing and then waiting for things to settle down again.
Anyway I'll give it another few days on the synthetic t3 and then if there is no improvement I'll ask my doc to put me back on the extract.
