Technically, each college can decide what constitutes a record. The general practice, however, is to count any mark made in the remainder of the track season.

And the reason, as pointed out above, that Wheating doesn't get a CR is that Jim Ryun, for one, ran faster--at 19--on dirt--in 1966, a mere 44 years ago.

However, the earlier poster who said that Ryun did not run any faster, after that, was in error. Ryun broke his own record the next year (running solo), and also ran a 3:33.1 (IIRC) 1500 in 1967.

What is Wheating's potential at this distance?

This guy is just raw talent mixed with good coaching. 6'5" 175lbs. Ran 14:55 in his first year running in HS.

Could he be the next legit American miler since Steve Scott or Jim Ryun? Exciting stuff!

My prediction: Within the next 4 years, Wheating will shatter Webb's American record in the mile. This dude is a horse. His potential is incredible.

I'm not going to hate on Wheating here, but definitely going to make observations for thought...

1. Wheating DID run an amazing time - no one can argue that. The fact so many LRC posters last week said he didn't belong in the race shows again how dumb we can be.

2. Wheating's quote on the front about "I think I can run with the big dogs" bothers me a bit from the stand point he never actually was part of the same race as the front pack. He ran EXACTLY like Webb did in 2000? when Webb ran 3:53 for the HS record. Start in back and pick your way through the pack. For Wheating that was his best strategy on this day, but I think it is a FAR different thing to get up front, make your moves, and challenge for the win. There is still a big jump to be made - only time will tell with that.

I think if he can run 3:45 then he can start thinking about 3:44 or even 3:43. Damn. Those times are in the stratosphere. There's a special place in heaven for milers under 3:45.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, wasn't Letsrun.com created on a distance-running platform? And, I'd be willing to bet that, oddly enough, you are also a "skinny white distance runner." So, the original poster wasn't far off by stating "no one cares about hurdles," since I'd be willing to bet that roughly 97% of the people who visit this site are DISTANCE RUNNERS. Its a decent race for him but really not that great in the world scene. he didn't really hang with the big guys at all and a 3:51 is still like 5 seconds from where webb was only a few years ago. call me when Wheating goes 3:45

That race puts Wheating 14th on the All Time American Milers list just ahead of Craig Masback.

Good post. The caveat is that Wheating is just starting to dabble in the mile, and I think he ran a brilliant race to goose his confidence. I doubt he ever had any notion that he could win or should be in the race to win. But with his 800 speed and some serious base building, this guy probably will be our top miler in 2012.

When he really starts to focus on the event, sub-3:50 is probably a lock and it's just a matter of how low he can go. If he is a sub-3:50 guy and improves his 800 speed, he can, in fact, run with the "big boys." The guy beat Lagat and Lomong, and, while you can attribute their races to, perhaps, fatigue, it's not like Wheating hasn't had a long season already.

Apparently, this was not his strategy prior to AJ's brilliant last lap in the B race. He had originally intended to run mid-pack of dead last. He also believes he left something on the track by not moving up earlier. He honestly feels like he could have run the leaders down. Like his confidence, and hope he gets a chance to race the big dogs instead of just running in a race with them.

I'd say his 1:45 pr is more impressive since it was run 2 years ago. We haven't seen Wheating in an elite 800 yet all out. We can't just compare his new mile pr, to his old 800 pr. Just a day ago he'd clearly be considered an 800 runner, we can't just throw that out the window because now he has a fresh mile pr and an old 800 pr.

he could end up going 1:44 this year, or 1:43...who knows. Or maybe he'll never break 1:45 and move up. Just saying until we see what he has at 800 now, it's a bit unfair to compare Prs in those two distances.

Didn't see the race on TV. Did anybody get Wheating's (not the leaders) approximate splits? Just curious.
