Mike Fanelli's comments about Carlos Lopes are totally accurate. Some of the other names being mentioned here gained considerable amounts of weight, but Lopes is the one guy you could not possibly even recognize.

I am curious to see how much Lopes has let himself go.
And in all fairness to Steve Ovett, one site confirms that a car accident destroyed his knees.

I heard he paced some of his runners a few weeks ago. 4:00 1500.... 8:00 3k

I VAGUELY recall a wild evening in NO whereby after a stomp atthe reebok bash we went to a gentlemen's club...BH was with us and then I (embarassedly) am drawing a huge (48 year old senior moment )blank......you gotta e-mail me with the answer to this track & field trivi answer otherwisw it'll absolutely drive me bonkers!

OK, not a world class runner, but have you seen Larry Guinee lately (he won CA state meet 1600m 20 years ago).
I agree with big dumby. Bjorklun. I heard he put on some weight.

I recall an interview with Ovett in Athletics, the Canadian track magazine. He spoke a little bit about the accident saying that he was training with a group of cyclists when they made a turn and were hit head on by a car. Ovett was in the lead at that point. He also said that he'd planned to go after a sub 4 minute mile later that year (I believe he'd just turned 40 at the time) and had been confident prior to the accident that he would have been able to pull it off. The rest of the article really outlined what a character he is in that he seems to be completely unaffected by his fame and accomplishments and didn't even really feel his best races were anything too special.

well, yeah, and I think it was in Sacto at the last trials and I honestly did not recognize him at first...I actually had to ask someone who it was...ooops ( and, aside from being a great guy, he was a bad ass in his day!)
