The whole "who's right" and "who's wrong" is not important here. Like someone else pointed out earlier in the thread... they need to freaking pull athletics out of schools and go club system. This kind of BS does not need to be occupying the time of educational administrators.

When I was in high school I ran what I wanted to run. The coach came to me and asked me what workouts he should have for the team. He could have done it himself but I respected him more for asking me. Besides that, if I wanted to change in the middle of practice then I did. Any coach who tries to dictate to a team is an idiot. You mean any coach who tries to run a structured program who has done his work and knows how to train each individual should just ask them what to do instead? If my coach did that, I would really lose confidence in his ability to know how to train people. Yes, you have to do it on a somewhat individual basis, but that doesn't mean the athletes get to make up their own stuff. Besides, if they were to do that, it would require that everyone on the team had sufficient knowledge to train themselves, and that just doesn't happen. I'll admit I didn't know what was best, so I asked a coach what to do, and as long as it made sense and didn't hurt me, I wouldn't complain.

It's times and articles like this that make me realize how good the coaching I had in HS. Luckily they were all teachers as well so didn't have to worry about losing them for that reason

This whole story sounds like a whine-fest. Some parents named Pederson are good at manipulating the media (including this one) and giving them something to write about. Boo-hoo. She's only run a 10:51 3200 anyway. Running that kind of mileage will burn her out. Evil, ignorant, self-serving parents. Shame on them, and shame on brojo's for allowing themselves to be manipulated, too.

Not trying to be a troll or an assh*le here but if your placing at state is in the order that you listed then you are not a very good coach the first couple of years you would have been lucky or benifited from the pervious coaches work and you have been worst since...if your places are in a reverse order then CHEERS!!! as that is very impressive!!!

Do you coach high school kids? Group dynamic is everything when it comes to developing a team (at least in my area). It is the reason that the majority of kids want to run hard. I've been coaching for 16 years now and from what I've seen, very, very few athletes will actually go out and do all of their training on their own.
When I was a new coach, I thought that all runners would be motivated like I was. I would talk to them about how to do their weekend runs...at their own pace...listening to their bodies. Monday would come around and I'd ask the kids how their runs went and they were like, "we were supposed to run?" I would have a bunch of different track workouts going on at the same time for small groups of distance kids...That worked out well for perciecely one girl (who ended up getting bronze at USA Juniors). Most kids would end up saying something to the effect of, "I wish I was that other person, she only has to run 400s. I hate 1000s".
Group dynamic is everything. Kids will work harder and acutally seem to enjoy the shared suffering if the suffering is actually SHARED.
Our program has been simplified lately. More progression runs and tempo intervals. Workouts levels are still based on experience and ability, but there is a much smaller range to the types of workouts going on. As a result of this, we are seeing much better results.
Sorry for the hijack. I also am sad to hear what has happened at Carlmont. Having said that, I don't think that this story is an indictment of the entire hs coaching system. There are plenty of great high school coaches out there. Furthermore, having the sport in schools exposes a ton of kids that might otherwise never try it at all. I know for a fact that the current high school national 2 mile record holder would not have become a runner if it were not for his high school team.
For the guy that took a swipe at the Central Valley of CA....do you live here? there are plenty of good coaches here. I believe that the current national leader at 3000m is from the valley.
I have some Sh#t to add to this, particularly to Johnnyb and OHYABABY, but I'll start with the latter of the losers first:
OHYABABY: 8 miles even 7 days per week will get you smeared angainst competition and without altering diet a runner wouldn't even maintain weight gain under slowing metabolism.
As far as "having a life", I was a World-class runner. I would tell you that YOU missed out on life, my friend...Go back to the bars and play your darts.

Some facts....
1.Jessie Petersen has never run 80-90 miles per week. That is an exaggeration.
2.She has never had injury problems even though she does plenty of miles.
3.Jessie has not contacted the press. The situation is the reverse.
4.The new coach is young, very inexperienced and was hired for a well established, hard working team.
The problem was elevated when she used her brother and sister as assistant coaches.
5.Over 65% of the Carlmont long distance team has quit. (There must be a problem when that many kids leave a team.) Jessie was one of the last ones to go.
6. The school has now rescinded the contract but any athlete who quit is not allowed back for this track season.
7. Athletes and parents had to sign the orignal 5 page contract
8.This article is about Petersen but there is much more to the whole story. (Poor treatment of runners)
Uh yes she does run 85 miles a week. It appeared in an article last cross country season.
"During her heavy base training periods, Petersen ran an average of 85 miles per week."
I haven't read all the posts yet, so this may have already been mentioned, but what was to prevent the young lady from simply leaving team practice, going to another track/hitting the roads/trails, and putting in the extra miles on her own?
And yes, she does sound like a bit of a prima donna.

Being around Jessie day to day, she is rather unassuming. She's dedicated to the sport and wants to run. She and others gave the situation their best shot for XC season and then into T&F but the ban on any outside running or other physical activity really got old, especially for the runners with championship histories or hopes. Being outside of this school and the CIF is a super bummer its true. Competition isn't nearly the same but at least Jessie can train and compete well with a clean slate, instead of having to either take a big performance hit or go against a coach's wishes.
She's running with the women now, not the girls...
