New Haven has better running areas than you might expect. Yale trains on their own golf course and it is a short run to reach parks that have good hill training areas.
The O'Neill twins (Laura and Kate) were very good high school runners but not world beaters. They finished up at Yale as All-Americans.
Now they choose to stay in New Haven to train with Eli coach Mark Young. Apparently its not a bad thing as they just qualified for the world xc championships. Their professional career has been one success after another.
Laura is this week's featured runner on
I'm a little biased as my daughter was indoor and outdoor captain in 2001. As a parent I was happy. She went in a 2:15 runner and at the Heps senior year doubled 4:27-2:11 trials and the next day went 4:29 (just enough to win, 2:10 (3rd) and 2:12 relay.
They must be doing something right. Runners go there and IMPROVE - not to mention the team atmosphere which is extremely positive.
This year they had a frosh run great at nationals but they are also willing to work with walk-ons.
Check every place out and make your own decision - but rest assured that Yale isn't a bad choice.
P.S. The men are surging to the topas well.
