Watch the video of the race, he looked fine afterwards. He walked over to several of the other guys and congratulated them. He wasn't laying on the ground or anything. He made a huge move with a couple laps to go, but just didn't have sharp legs at this point. Remember, his last race was a quite poor (for him) 97th at Nats.

Everyone needs to just relax and watch him piss off the critics.....just like last year.

Yea, not too far off. But keep in mind last year he

won the race,

finished very strongly,

and this year he looked VERY tired after the race-more tired then I have seen him after any race I've seen him run. He dug deep for that 7:51.

17 year old? You mean as a senior in high school? Well as a junior(probably 17 years old) Ritz won nationals and called it a year. As a senior he got bronze at the world championships. German could do neither of those. So when German was in College, he placed what? 11th? So he was 18 then just like Ritz was when he was a senior in high school.

Ritz never finished his college career, but he still has an XC championship.

You can't even compare German and Ritz's XC credentials. German can't even place in the top 50 in two tries at the XC championships where Ritz got 4th and 1st in his only attempts. Not to mention both times helping his team with an XC championship.

Well, the first time he would have been close to Ritz's finish had his achilles not given out. Up to that point he was having one hell of a season. This past year he was a member of an XC championship team, if he doesn't finish they don't win.

But I agree, Ritz is far superior to German in cross. But to act like German is some piece of shit runner is stupid and I'm not sure why so many people do it. German already has won more NCAA track titles than Ritz did, whoa. But they are both great runners who we should root for to do well. I like Ritz, he's great. So is German.

As a huge fan of both, I have to say that "far superior" is probably an overstatement. He has more consistent results, but the capacity to perform at a high level is pretty close.

Ritz was 3rd at World Juniors in part because of the incredibly poor conditions that year. It was a mudfest. He probably was top 10 material on a fast day. Teg would not have been 5th either. I love them both, but at the time they were 13:40+ guys. GF - a 13:25 guy mind you - was 11th at World Juniors on a dry course, while nursing an injury for 2-3 weeks prior (remember the boot pictures?). He beat Derrick and Puskedra SOUNDLY at USAs (20 & 35 seconds - they were what, 5th & 7th at NCAA CC that year?). He would likely have been 3rd at NCAAs had he finished. He was with the chase pack at 7.5K, after being 11 seconds back at 5K.

This past season GF clearly had issues, so to use it as "he can't finish in the top 50" is a bit misleading. He could have redshirted and the season wouldn't have counted in your anaylsis, right? But he ended up with a team title.

Ok, I agree with this. I was just saying results wise, Ritz is far superior. German didn't even win Footlocker.

What kind of asshat compares a college sophomore's performance to friggin' Komen? Seriously?

It looks to me like German was instructed to hang back and see how it feels. Judging from his late surge, it felt good. He handily passed Emanuel, Biwott and Coe. All Americans Bethke (4th in NCAA 5000), and Heath (5th) were also in that race. Looks like he has a good shot at another title in whatever event he runs at the championships.
