I'm glad someone else out there feels the same way I do about that book. I had to read this book in high school, and hated it.

You took quite a few liberties with your interpretation of my post...

Serial killers/assassins aren't really my area of expertise, so I can't give you all the stats. I was just pointing out the consistent relationship with Mr. Salinger's book.

Might be a good project for some grad student to look at. Criminal profiling can be a slippery business, but IMO, there's enough evidence of a relationship (J.D. and socially isolated killers) to look into it further as a potential characteristic for law enforcement to consider... among others.

I have been told that one of the reasons Catcher in The Rye is so good is because us teenagers are meant to be able to relate to him and feel the same way he does about things (phoniness in people etc). I however couldn't find myself relating to him because all he did was a be a whiny snob. It wasn't because his dad was a lawyer or that he had a sister or the book was based in a different time period to me or that he had a dead brother. That sort of crap isn't a reason to not relate to him. I haven't read Moby Dick so am not sure if one of the good things about it is that we are meant to relate to him or not. I do however know that if the reason you couldn't relate to him was because he was a nineteenth century merchant marine-turned-whaler you're an idiot. If the point of Moby Dick is that you are meant to relate to him for those reasons then it would just be a useless book. I am sure Moby Dick isn't meant to be written as a book where nineteenth century merchant marine-turned-whalers go "wow he is feeling the same things as me. He is also a nineteenth century merchant marine-turned-whaler." CITR seems to me like a book where whiny snobs relate to the main character. Teenagers ARE meant to go "wow he deals with the same things I do." I couldn't and many others can't. His issues were crap. Well done on making a useless comparison though.

As promised earlier in this thread, I finally read Catcher In the Rye. It was good but really didn't live up to the hype surrounding it. As mentioned by others in this thread, that is not to blame JD or the book but mostly those who over hyped it.

At times I was tempted to put the book down as I was tired of the repetitious nature of the writing but I hung in there. At times I began to despise Holden but in the end I slightly 'bonded' with him and wanted to see him succeed.

There were some good lines, definitely, that I will probably find myself repeating for the next few days. Overall it was a good read.

"You can't ever find a place that is nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write 'F*** You' right under your nose."

I told you! Except I disagree that it's a good book. It's not.
