Where would you guys put Khalid Khannouchi, the former Moroccan, who came to NYC in his early 20's?
Is he a real American or not?
If an American moves to China for work, and then a few years later is granted Chinese citizenship, is that person (the former American) really Chinese? You should know that acquiring Chinese or Japanese citizenship would be impossible for most of us.

What an asshole. I guess we could say "at least he admitted he was wrong." But he never really did. Did he? Great journalism there, buddy. In the future, maybe he'll stick to writing what he knows about. But then again, in today's culture of scream-it-louder journalism, he probaby will not.
As Mayflower American, the following describes Rovell's accomplishments that helped raised the Old Glory at international stages. By the way the info came from CNBC website:
1) He finished the New York Marathon in 2004, the same year he ate six hot dogs and buns at a hot dog eating qualifier.
2) He finished fifth in the world in the World Championship of Watermelon Seed Spitting in Luling, Texas in 2005, and scored one point in a two-minute stint for the Washington Generals at Madison Square Garden in 2008.
3) He is also on the Green Bay Packers season ticket waiting list,
4) has searched for golf balls in the water of the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass and has been tutored by the Dallas Mavericks free throw coach.
4) In February of 2008, when Shaquille O'Neal was traded to the Phoenix Suns, he gave Shaq the idea to call himself "The Big Cactus."
From the kind of reporting the whole CNBC team does (such as Maria Bartoromo -no-journalist by any measure but lots of access to CEOs, Rick Santelli- the ranter with huge mouth and little brain, and the rest of idiots on Power Lunch etc. ) it is no surprise the network is loosing its viewership to other networks faster than Darren Rovell swallow his favorite hotdogs.
With CNBC Noble caliber economic analysis team, immense foreknowledge on the impending housing debacle, incredible understanding on the inner-workings of commodities, derivatives, security mortgages, etc the insight of Darren Rovell’s on race and immigration issues, would make the network the envy of cable journalism.

Even though I don’t agree with the author, he brings up a valid point, of when we consider someone to be semantically American instead of syntactically. I think what bothers most in the “real american” debate is that he’s a thoroughbred. He’s of 100% East African descent while most Americans are some melting pot muts, and I think deep down it bothers these people that another person is just straight up genetically geared for our sport more than they ever could be… I just fail to see how that transcends nationality.
The reality is that Nationality isn’t and has never been the basis behind the genetic makeup of a human being. They’re imaginary lines drawn that give people of similar mind a sense of community, belonging, and strength. In this case, Meb’s family found that in America, which makes him, at least in my mind, American as apple pie. The author of this article isn’t racist; he just doesn’t understand that nationality is a state of mind and choice, not a genetic makeup. So, bust out the Red, White, and Blue, because Meb’s win is arguably more American than if Ryan Hall won it.
So, does this mean that Sanya Richard's gold medal should be attributed to her being of Jamaican descent? Should Nastia Lukin's Olympic gymnastic's win be attributed to her Russian background? This is so silly. I mainly follow the sprints and hurdles but was very proud to see all the Americans that finished in the top 10. Meb's win was an amazing victory for American distance running and the overall achievement of the American marathoners was an amazing victory for American distance running as well. So what if he was born in Eritrea? He trained here, practically grew up here and his wins go to the USA, not Eritrea. Ringer...yeah, whatever. That was asinine.
Meb winning does not contribute anything to the "east african genetics"... that everyone so badly wants to see settled by having Hall win a big one.

This is the dumbest thing ever. Who cares if he was born here or not? The greatest thing about America is that the best and brightest want to come to the US and succeed. We had a non-American born runner carry the flag leading our Olympic team. As a conservative, I respect immigrants who come to this country legally, work hard and make the most of their ability. God Bless him and we should all be proud of him.

Did you also know that the last American before Meb to win was Alberto Salazar? And do you know where Salazar was born? He was born in Cuba, and shared a very similar background to Meb. Though Salazar immigrated with his family when he was two-years-old and Meb was I believe closer to 12 years-old, the fact is they both went to school in America, lived here their entire lives leading up to their vicotries at the New York City Marathon (Salazar won three years in a row), and are in fact U.S. citizens.
So why do you degrade his accomplishment and not Alberto Salazar's? The only possiblity I can deduce from your article and apology may be the color of their skin. Salazar: white; Meb: black. You said: "But Keflezighi's country of origin is Eritrea, a small country in Africa. He is an American citizen thanks to taking a test and living in our country." You had to point to the fact he was from Africa, and belittle his great success.
I assume now that you know Salazar was not American-born, you can write-off his accomplishment as well in another article. The last American born victor was Bill Rodgers, winning four times in a row, spanning from 1976-79, since you are really concerned with when an American-born runner last won.
It saddens me that in this country, ethnicity plays such a huge role with identity. Just look at the questioning of our own President Barack Obama's nationality. It illustrates a huge problem with the media and demonstrates an underlying discomfort with ethnicity in our country. Articles such as your own Mr. Rovell only perpetuate and bring to light this problem.
Being "American" is purely cultural. Unless those who insist that it comes down to someone's place of birth would say that a NY victory by a man who was born in America and moved to Uganda shortly after was raised there his entire life would then count as "a real American win."
