The Atlantic
Lapham's Quarterly - You don't get much broader than this, as it covers one topic, in depth, using moden and hostoric scholars, thinkers, actors, poets, politicians, quotes, art, and so on, to thoroughly plumb one topic as well as anyone can.
The Christian Science Moniter has a weekly that is pretty good. Probably tilted more towards international coverage.

The Nation
The New York Times (I know it's a newspaper but since weekly newsmagazines-Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, etc. have gotten so shitty its the only way to keep up with those "pointless current events" {what a moron}).
Mental Floss. It's a trivia magazine, so not so much news, but things are presented in an interesting and easy to digest manner. You'll pick up a lot of random knowledge and end up remembering it.

The Economist is fairly centrist, though it does have a free-market bias. See the most recent issue for examples of its adaptability, though, in regard to major issues of fiscal stimuli, tax rates, etc. Or just flex your didactic diction some more.
The Economist is the most annoying periodical I have every read. I think it is the consistently coercive tone. It really is something special.

Spot on and the ones who think it is so important to keep up with your "current affairs" are always the ones who dont understand shit about it but have some kind of conceit about being "well informed".
Other than the Economist, which is fantastic, I read Foreign Policy.
A great Weekly publication for quick informative news articles is the Christian Science Monitor. No, it's not an evangelical paper...
New Scientist is a great weekly publication for science news.
I'm really surprised that no one has said to read your local paper.
If you want news that directly effects you in your community (school boards, city councils, proposed roadways or civic improvements), that is probably the best source. It's not going to do you a lot of good to go to a city council meeting armed with knowledge of the wheat prices in Bulgaria if you are concerned with a sewer rate hike.
P.S. I also find Newsweek to have gone in the toilet since their format change. More like "editorial week".
