It should have been more like
"Oh shit! What's that sound?! Call the cops! I'm not taking any chances. I'll wait here until the cops come."

The burglar innitiated theft, but the student innitiated physical confrontation.
Why, because he went into the garage to check out a noise?
YOu guys are funny. This is a disfunctional guy who should've been a warden of the state a long time ago and will now be on trial for murder and you're making him out to be a hero. Typically Letsrun response, rallying behind the tough guy screwball because your all so tough yourself. And I bet all you guys drive lifted trucks, served in Iraq, and aer'nt afraid to unleash some gold old fashioned butt-kicking against the tennis team.

how exactly do you know hes disfuctional...
how bout this is a guy who heard a noise in his garage and suspected an intruder, grabbed the best weapon available to him, investigated the noise and defended himself using that weapon...sorry you dont want shit like this to happen to you dont break into someones home
and for the record, someone driving a lifted truck in no way makes them "disfuctional" and you are an absolute piece of shit for implying an insult about people who served in iraq...go f*** yourself

Relax, the burglar got his point.

I was insulting letsrunner like yourself that talk about kicking Iraqi ass and that the Iraqis are getting what they deserve and yet have never served in Iraq. I DID serve in Iraq, asshole, and anybody that has gone through that would realize that this student should be put away for a long time.
Have you served in Iraq? If you did you would see violence that puts this shit in perspective. But you'll never go,will you. You'll just get all brave and say go f*** yourself to people you think are insulting our soldiers. Listen, I don't need your verbal support. If you're so tough that this samuari dude is your hero, then enlist and shut the fvck up.
Samurai swords are soft. A real man like chuck norris would have just roundhouse kicked him to death.
I've been burglarized before and would have loved the opportunity to hack the piece of human garbage responsible to death. Better yet, I would have enjoyed lowering him feet-first into a wood chipper. This Rice guy got exactly what he deserved and it pleases me greatly that the last sound he ever heard was his own agonized screaming.

no i meant be careful about making statements like that outside your head. it was an ignorant statement. what does robbing people have to do with having common sense?
Sorry I am a freakin idiot as usual! :(
Few years back in PA. Two adult sons and a dad heard something in the basement. All three went down , no weapons. A male had broken in thru small window. They yelled "Don't you move." The survivor, one of the sons, later testified that when his dad yelled this, in a fraction of a second the guy snapped right fired four shots and was out and gone. Dad and one son hit in the face and chest. Dead. The last son said the guy fired so quickly they could not even have raised a hand. Boom Boom Boom ,Boom, gone. The boy said he was blinded by the muzzle flash and the smoke was also blinding. You can hesitate if you want, not me. Not even gonna say a thing.

He may have been stupid, but he was well within his rights.

I'm too smart to go to Iraq, that would be wasting my talents. I have worked for the Air Force doing weapons reasearch though. Anyways, I don't see how you can think this kid should be put away for "a long time". He heard a noise, grabbed a weapon (most likely just to scare the guy away) and went to investigate. Not the smartest call but I would probably do the same thing if I had a lot of my stuff taken. He goes out and the burglar lunges at him, what is he supposed to do then? Give him the sword? Kid is fine legally, living with what he did will be tough even if it was in self defense.
How about this.....call the cops and let them take care of it. And not to bash on the guys who went to Iraq and Afghanistan, but same principle applies: Just because there are terrorist in Iraq doesn't mean every student who owns a sword should go over there to "check out the noise". You let trained professionals do it (i.e. soldiers).
And if i was Castor Semenya, I would go f*** myself.
By the way......anybody who goes out and buys a Samari sword has a tendancy to want to use it.

I haven't served in Iraq but I did recently return from Afghanistan. Hope that is good enough for ya.
Ninja-college-dude should not face any jail time whatsoever. If a criminal dies while committing a crime, so be it. You shouldn't go thinking that all military people think like you. Most that I know would completely support Ninja-college-dude.
To the earlier poster that responded to my police 'after the fact' post. If you call the police and tell them you hear a noise in your backyard, how long do you think it will take them to get there? Unless it's a slow night and there happens to be a cop close by it's going to be awhile. They show up 'after the fact'.
Remember the situation in TX a few months ago where the guy shot 2 people he saw in his neighbor's house? The old man was in no immediate danger and he did not face any jail time. I know, I know, it's Texas. Other states have laws that allow you to protect property. I believe it was KY that passed a law making it legal to shoot a car jacker. Laws vary by state, but there are those that make it legal to not only protect your own life but also your property. Anyways, the Ninja-college-dude could always say he has been having trouble with raccoons or something.

Going into the garage and instigating confrontation is premeditated harassment.
You are a whacko. I am sorry. If someone is breaking into your home - a garage is part of a home - you have every right to investigate. It may not always be smart, but the right is there.
Premeditated harassment?
I think you are a troll.
Listen, you might not live in a city like Baltimore. The cops do not, I repeat DO NOT, come flying over to your house if you report a noise in the garage. Believe me.
Most men hear a noise in their garage and they check it out themselves. If I called the cops every time I heard a noise in my 1928 home...

youre assuming a lot of things buddy...just because i don't think the kid should be locked up and the burglar was mostly at fault, does not mean i want to buy a samurai sword and go around chopping up burglars
I merely feel that it is unreasonable for someone to call the cops every time they hear a noise in the garage (if you want a system like this we are going to need a lot more of those cops, and also not unreasonable for a person to bring a weapon as a precaution
Once that is established, the only recounting of the events we have is from the kid, who says he was cornered and attacked making the use of his weapon in self defense totally appropriate...Im not sure why your natural inclination is to, rather than believe the only eye witness account we have, make up your own that is supported by no evidence or testimony and that favors the known criminal...
its a sad thing to happen but thinking the kid was not at fault does not make someone a gung ho cowboy whos going to go out a prowl the neighborhood looking for burglars to kill
