Then get involved in doing more to get the sport cleaned up than crying about a very natural reaction.

Don't know how most people feel on the subject, but if I were traveling the world all the time and money was really no object, I would fly 7 hours to be at home for 4 days...no question.
I'd definitely would go back to hit this:

This sounds very similar to what Viren did in Montreal between the 10000m and 5000m races..

Post your evidence that there is a state run doping program in Ethiopia, a country that is between 165th and 184th in the world in terms of nominal GDP per capita.
Yes. But Hermmans with the money he gets from be agent of Gebre Bekele Dibaba he can buy all Ethiopia territory.
Gabrielle Rosa that works with Kenyan runners like Tergat he is so rich that can buy all Kenya territory.
GDP per capita means nothing.

I see they preserve history and tradition. The wear tribal clothes.
Dibaba has never been managed by Jos Hermens.
GDP is relevant when talking about state sponsored programs.

What did Ritz and Teg do after Berlin and before their other races in Europe?
Why would they go back to Oregon? It's a 9hr time difference. That would really screw up their biological clock.
If Bekele is only going back home - it's 1hr. Not sure that he was going back for the altitude - was that just the interpretation on the front page (did HE say that), or was he just being coy - didn't want to say he wants to bang the wife and get a change of clothes.
Not sure why this always gets back to doping. He hasn't looked good in his last two races - which is why the Americans are even close to him. These guys (Ritz and Teg) were behind Bekele at World XC as juniors - Ritz probably trained harder at that age anyway - so there is no reason to suspect that they shouldn't be close when KB has a bad day. KB is obviously tired, and perhaps lonely - so he went home to regenerate. Why wouldn't he? It's not like he has to be completely rested physically to win, but perhaps it was simply mental regeneration from living out of a suitcase for weeks, and he was fed up with it - he can afford to make the trip.
For the same cost, couldn't he bring the Mrs to him, if some TLC was all he wanted?

I'd like to see it, too:-) Granted, we didn't have internet, twitter or bloggers back then, but there were quite a few journalists working for TV, radio and press even then. And let's say that Lasse Viren was a hot subject for at least Finnish journalists for every day of the Olympics. You may not believe it, but his absence even for a day wouldn't have been hushed up out of patriotic or nationalistic motives.
Besides, it would've taken some skill to get him incognito through two flights across the Atlantic.
OTOH if you want to believe in the "Viren was blood doped to the gills" theory, you don't have to put him in trans-Atlantic passenger planes: all it would've taken was some transfusion equipment, a cold storage bag and a doctor or a nurse...
A number of Finish athletes attended a reception at the Ottawa home of the Finish ambassador to Canada on the rest day of the track schedule during the Montreal Olympics. Viren was there and autographed my mother's invitation card for me. He did not go back to Finland between the 10,000m and the 5,000m.
Booty Call.
I'd never read that Viren had flown back to Finland, or probably forgot since I was a kid. Totally fits the need to inject new blood.
The thing that amazes me that he never gave a straight answer until Kenny Moore visited him in Finland. And I suspect he lied to Moore. Once he spent time around Moore, he probably felt he could play him and lie.
It's what sociopath do. Otherwise, every time Viren was asked about the rumors of blood doping, he would have said "no," all we do is train hard.
He was a police officer, for crying out loud. Why obfuscate for so long?
