What about advertising and trying to get a marathon on mainstream TV. Do people believe a sponsor would pony up advertising money thinking there's going to be a televised jog every year? I mean it definitely wasn't exciting those first 28 minutes watching the women stroll towards Boston. At least when the men went off there was competition from the start (without any Spira Foot Solution guys stealing the show).
If they don't want to showcase their own talents, let them run in the masses. Or have them go off closer to the main starting time. Maybe they'd find it embarrassing having the guys overtake them after they were started in advance by 10 or 15 minutes.
And the runners also try their best to win, at some point, and some just don't get it done. Do marathon times mean anything to the general public? 2:17 might as well be the 3:17 that their chunky coworker ran in Tucson. It's not exciting to watch some guy run all alone, either. At least with the women there was anticipation for who would make the first move and when. People tune in because they like how the sport appears on television, not because they want to see teams or athletes hit some arbitrary statistic. Basically, those who think that the sport will be more appealing if runners hit certain times are delusional.

I've read through this entire thread and didn't come across a single convincing argument to withhold prize money from the top women. It's an old, tired argument to claim runners should run as fast as some arbitrarily set time (in the viewers mind) to be regarded as worthy of money, acclaim, Olympic medals, etc. These are athletic contests where the flow of energy isn't necessarily tied to time, comparisons, vicarious possibilities or entertainment value. One or all of these things may be entertwined in a contest but the outcome isn't necessarily influenced, or reliant on any of them.
It's silly to dictate to the competition how they MUST run.
It's about racing and not about times. Two completely different aspects of the same sport.
Take pitching. Throwing 100 mph pitches over the plate to the catcher in warm ups is impressive. Striking out the other team's best hitter with a one run lead in the last inning, two outs, and a guy on third with a finesse pitch is an all together feat.

Actually that's one of the reasons you will never see a WR in Boston. A net downhill is actually a bad thing. It thrashes your quads pretty bad over a long distance. All things being equal, you'd rather run on the flat over a long distance.

The guy might not have expressed himself perfectly, but he absolutely has a point. Oh, and in case you didn't realize it, many top race directors agree with him, and they only pay out full prize $ to runners who make certain cut off times for men and women. It happened in the recent Paris marathon (and I don't think any of the women got full prize $), and in a big half marathon (forget which one).
SO........ the guy has a point, and the trend is going in that direction. I think it is fair. It is absurd to pay the same prize money for 3rd place for a men's 2:05 and a women's 2:36, which I think were the times in Rotterdam. Hopefully they did not pay equal prize $ for those places.
I am okay with that IF those are the rules set out from the start. However, I hope it does not go that route. I like to see a "race" not a glorified time trial with rabbits. The focus on times has gotten silly IMNSHO.
The problem I see with the time standard method is weather conditions can play such a huge role in a marathon. Boston is especially susceptible to wild weather changes (start temps around 100 degrees F and other times where it probably has been under 40 with rain).
I bet that none of the "majors" go with this. Maybe this is not the case with all the majors, but do they offer bonuses for course records or world records?
