Yes, you are partly correct but Geb, Bekele, Komen and Kitpanui can time trial but more importantly peak and WIN or PLACE well against international championship level competitions.

TIME trialing does not equate to WORLD CHAMPION!!!! Hence, my point about RUPP turning into another WEBB.

We will see if Rupp will run faster when it counts in August or shot his wad in February for AR.

This thread has so much wrongheaded, illogical, nasty, bitter, envious thinking on it that it's enough to make me worry about our nation's future.

Fortunately, I had other experiences today that alleviated that worry.

I don't need to know anything other than his racing record to have reached my conclusions. It's simplistic to suggest otherwise.

Pollyanna. Your post makes me more concerned for the fate of not just our nation, but society and humanity as a whole.

It seems pretty outrageous for people to expect rupp to win all, or even most, of his races. Rupp has already won a few races this year in cross and track, and he will win more as the year goes on. He has won by pulling far and away from everyone, and he has won close races. He has also run well when it counts, whether it means winning NCAAs, winning a big race against Solinsky at Stanford, or being the top American finisher in the men's 10k at the Olympics (setting a PR in some tough conditions). No matter what anyone says, he has improved so much and has done so much with his career, so why shouldn't he be proud? I'm sure he wanted to win the 5k this weekend. I'm sure the thought about what he could have done to win it has crossed his mind since the race on multiple occasions, but that doesn't mean that he can't be extremely happy with setting a PR and an American record. Rupp has a lot of natural talent, but most people could not come close to doing what he has, even with that talent. He has put in the time and effort and has made the sacrifices necessary to accomplish what he has. I cannot see myself being reasonable at all in doing anything but congratulating a guy like Galen Rupp for doing what he has, and then wishing him luck in what he will do in the future.

Yes because Rupp has a long history of "shooting his wad" early.

Did Geb not have the guts to win world cross? Did Komen not have the guts to hold off Geb many times despite going much faster than him at 3K & 2 miles? His records still stand. It's a big load of hypocracy and double standards based of your projections for some runner. Silly stuff really.

Rupp has never run this fast so early in the season.....can he able to hold his form or peak again in August after having peaked for indoors to set an AR? and after running hard at ncaa xc and olympics....that is one long year (sounds like a young Salazar to me who chased AR and raced too much)

see Scotty Bauhs post about last year or Webbs incredible early season form from years past..or even Hall assertions about not taking a break....when it came to competing at worlds or olympics they didn't perform well....

...when it comes to Worlds will he be in peak form? place better than last year and be within the top 5 let alone top 3? that is what counts if he is going to be the icon Nike is touting him to be.

For you idiots bashing Rupp for not winning, he could easily have Oregon set up a race any day he wanted and bring in pacers to set records. He has went to where the good competition is that makes him a better runner even if he doesn't win every race.

Of course you people bashed McDougal for never running against any competition and always winning. You are never happy. Why don't you just go away to another sport and spend all your free time flaming their best performers?

I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I think the thing I respect most about Rupp though is that he has shown year after year to bring a great game at the end of his seasons.

You may be right about Salazar in his day, but I do think that Rupp races for a different cause, a bigger picture which is overall progress to eventually compete with the best in the world. Perhaps Salazar learned from his own mistakes and does not coach his athletes the same way. His coaching record is pretty strong over the past 4 years in terms of athletes coming up big on the big days.

The last thing, and I may just be unaware of this. Is Nike really touting him as something more than he is, or is that the projection that has been created largely on this forum? I know Nike supports him (not financially, as a fan) and believes in him, but I haven't seen or heard anything from "Nike" that says he's ready to take on the worlds best. His coach has even stated that he's not ready for that yet.

Is this your professional opinion based on your sessions with Rupp?
