Has anyone attempted or completed the 800/1500/5000 triple at a meet of significance?

While El G's time trial is definitely sketchy, the time is in line with what his other races and training would indicate he could run. Plus, I don't see any incentive for the 1500m world record holder to lie about his 800m pr, so he gets the benefit of the doubt from me.

Back in the 1970's when you were allowed run more events in HS, I won the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m, for my HS team. Granted it was a dual meet and the other school had just started their track team that year...

Considering that El G was 3+ seconds faster at the mile and 1500m then Cram (who was not known for his blistering quarter speed) and he did 1:42.88, I don't find it surprising at all that Hicham went 1:42 as well.

this was my freshman year, so 2006 in the GNAC which is d2 conference:

1500 - 1. David Kiplagat, UAA, 3:58.09; 2. Jasper Peach, HSU, 3:58.22

Steeplechase - 1 . Jasper Peach, HSU, 9:14.05;

5000 -1. Jasper Peach, HSU, 14:55.75

this was the last year Humboldt state was in the GNAC. I realize its not exactly what you asked for but impressive nevertheless.

Hey Bub, Tommy Fulton did that quadruple at NATIONALS...back when NAIA nationals meant something.

It is possible those guys would have a chance but in terms of actual verifiable results I think Said is the only one I can think of that has evidence to prove that he was a threat at all three distances. I don't think Webb's 13:10 is good enough, too far from a world competitive time.

Morceli ran a 3:48 mile, 7:25 3000m, 13:03 5000m and a 1:44.8 800m within about a two week span in 1994.

I am a former D-3 runner myself, so I can speak from experience. Just because they DON'T receive athletic scholarships doesn't mean that they're not talented enough to do so if they had wanted to run for a DI or DII program.

Will Leer - 4th at the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 1500 - was a DIII runner for Pomona College. Pomona is in the same SCIAC conference that's full of "800 lb brains."

There are many great athletes who competed at the DIII level.

The accomplishments of DIII athletes shouldn't be looked down upon simply because they don't receive scholarships.

Really the only 800-5k guy in terms of medaling chances-in any history.

El G's 800 PR is 1:47.18. Obviously he had faster in him but I still don't see him as an 800 medal threat. Morceli at 1:44.79 was a more real one. I'm not aware that Aouita ever doubled in major championship action, and certainly not the Olympics.

I don't think any 5k runner would have liked to see Ovett at the starting line.

I could definitely see El G going 1:42.5-1:43.0, and if that is not a threat what is? Morceli was probably in similar shape if not faster...you don't close 3:35 and 13:03 races in 51-52 without being about that fast at 800m. Put them in a rabitted 800m race going through in 50.xx and they would run 1:42.xx, I guarantee it. I mean, El G averages sub 55 for a 1500m, and routinely closes sub 3:30 races in sub 53...I mean 2 laps in 51.5 is definitely well within his reach.
