Portland, oregon idgits!
funny to call boston a non-college town when by this site there are roughly 32 colleges and universities in boston.

Castro Valley, California.
it is the largest "township" in the state and does not have a university.
it houses Lake Chabot (listed by anEconomist) and also has an all-weather track at the local high school.
by definition, Castro Valley is a TOWN. Because it is a TOWN without a college or university, and has excellent running trails, it is the top non-college town in the US.
added features:
good location. weather is great year-round. cold enough to make you tough in the winter, but it'll roast in the summer, as the hills can break the winds from the bay.
it has a cool little down-town, with coffee shops, barrito shops, a great little movie theatre, etc. i loved the summers i spent training in SL and CV. thats where college XC dreams are made.
there's also a great 5k-10k road race in the summer. i could go on and on, but it's a cool place to live.
I'd have to agree with anotherrunner who mentioned Manchester, CT.
Ranked one of the best trail towns, it has a rail trail that goes upwards of 15 miles one way, wickham park (home of countless xc meets), and an extensive open space with great singletrack trails (I was browsing a mt bike magazine and Case Mountain got ranked in the top 50 for mountain biking places in the USA). Has a few reservoirs too.
Plus, every Thanksgiving Manchester holds a little road race, with past winners having names like Treacy, Carroll, Gregorek, Burfoot, and Kelley.
I have never been there but from the group that trains there and the very small town feel that it is what do you guys think about Mammoth Lakes, CA for training? Also what do you think about it and the surrounding areas?
just curious
