We know what you were trying to say. I agree completly.
The Great Escape is my #1.
Star Wars.
I haven't seen enough movies to be truly worthy of making an informed decision on this, but movies I really love watching and I'll never not watch if they are on TV are:
The Godfather I and II
The Fugitive
Dr. Strangelove
The Big Lebowski
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Office Space
The Second LOTR(yes, the one that didn't get best picture)

Casablanca might get some props, however I nominate (Drum roll please):
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
You couldn't make that flick today without using CGI.
And check the cast BESIDES O'Toole:
Jack Hawkins
Paul Muni
Anthony Quayle
Omar Sharif
Anthony Quinn
Come on now.
Cahier, I Love You.

When did it become in vogue to bash Kane? It seemed to start after AFI ranked in #1 in American cinema of the 20th century.
First, it's still extremely watchable. Welles, Joseph Cotten and Agnes Moorehead are excellent and the effects and camera work are surprisingly acceptable to the modern palate. Second, the reason the effect and camera work have aged so well is that every movie made after it owes a debt to the work that Welles created. The framing devices, cinematography, makeup, and writing are so ground-breaking that you could spend years breaking down nothing but that film.
It's fine if someone's person tastes steer them away from the film, but realize the impact of it. The only other American film of comparable impact is "Birth of a Nation" which is pretty much unwatchable today (racism, etc.)

Quigley down under is a awesome movie. probably not top 10 of all time though.
It seems that to be a great movie it can't be a comedy at all.
Kind Hearts And Coronets.
Discuss.
There's a ton of "lists" out there, but for me, Sight And Sound, and Senses Of Cinema are the best. Check 'em out, serious film fans.
People, please discover foreign cinema, and old films. You are missing so much if you don't.
I am very surprised than Scarface hasn't been mentioned yet.
I don't believe that it is the greatest movie by any means, but it still deserves a mention.
No doubt Lawrence of Arabia is the best film ever. Missing from these pages so far are the original David Niven/Cantiflas Around the World in 80 Days and Guns of Navarone. They don't make films like any of these anymore, unfortunately.
The Right Stuff
On a side note, the Columbus Dispatch recently ran a fantastice article about John Glenn's wife Annie overcoming stuttering and helping other people with disabilities.
They have been married 64 years.
Don't think I've seen Amelie mentioned yet.
Shawshank? Yeah, it's good and all.
These would make my list. Not ranked except the first one, which is #1.
The Deer Hunter
Amelie
Easy Rider
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Sting
The Triplets of Belleville
Von Ryan's Express
2001: A Space Odyssey
Goodfellas
Heat
To Kill a Mockingbird
A River Runs Through It
Fargo
Finding Nemo
In the Heat of the Night
Apocalypse Now
Grand Prix
Five Easy Pieces
Contact
Alien
Moulin Rouge
The Andromeda Strain
In reference to "The Power Of One".
This is the greatest book I have ever read (by Bryce Courtney, truly inspiring). Don't most people say that the book is usually better then the movie? For me, watching the film would probably spoil it. I highly recommend any book worms out there to read it, not see the movie.
I don't know about you guys but when it comes to Comedies I think Monty's Holy Grail takes the cake. I also really liked "Some Like It Hot"
As I was reading everyone's list I was thinking "Isn't anyone going to list The Princess Bride?" I'm glad someone did!
Endurance
Billy Mills Story
Pre
Usual Suspects
Some Like It Hot is awesome!!
Forrest Gump gets my vote for the best crafted storyline of any movie. It has everything: happiness, sadness, comedy, action, drama, great acting, unforgettable characters, very quotable, original.
Many great choices here. I would add Ronin, Gallipoli, Midnight Run and Ravenous.
