Tender Mercies was great. I haven't seen it in 20 years but remember it well. It almost made me like country music. AND, I believe Duvall sang his own songs

Although I still haven't seen his Academy-Award-winning performance in "Capote" (probably because I haven't gotten a DVD player yet), Philip Seymour Hoffman is perhaps the one actor whose performances consistently wow me. (There may be a better verb than "wow," but it'll do.) Among my favorites are his performances in "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," "Happiness," "Loving Liza," and (to illustrate his range) "Along Came Polly."
By the way, in the praise for Duvall, I didn't see any mention of my favorite performance from him -- playing the role of Mac Sledge in the wonderfully understated "Tender Mercies," for which he won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
