Underwear Under Running Shorts?

Been wearing "cotton underwear" for years when running. I do so to AVOID some "sort of punishment!"

I always wore briefs under my shorts in training and a jock strap when racing.

The jock strap was more of a psychological prep for racing mentality.

Mission accomplished. I weighed in the low 180's when I took up running 4+ years ago, figured I could stand to lose 10 or 15 pounds. Having gotten the mileage up to 80-100+ in weeks where I'm serious about training, and weight down to 140, there's not a lot of junk remaining. (Well, I've still got that "junk", perfectly proportioned, not too big, not too small, just right...)

My point is just, if you're a smaller person than the typical American fatass, buy a smaller size already. S or even XS.

Or try a different brand: some brands seem to be sized with athletes in mind, others have submitted to a ridiculous size inflation in an apparent effort to assure Americans that it's alright to be sixty pounds overweight, we still consider you a medium. Geez, I needed an XS Brooks long sleeve race tee this winter despite being about 8 pounds over my racing weight (happens every winter, comes back off in summer) - and even at 140 lb I'm hardly "extra small". Especially for a runner, and this is supposed to be Brooks' market.

This has also been true for many years with "civilian" clothes, especially women's. Gods forbid that their ego should take a beating from buying the next larger size; no, we'll just make all the sizes bigger across the board.

I ware a jogbra under my shorts. Its surprisingly comfortable

Underwear? Wet... Chaffing... Ouch!

I am just shocked that so many guys go with out underwear and use the lining. Of course I do not run in running shorts except when I race so thats just me. But when I do race, I like the undies under neath. Why, bc i just cant have the boys bouncing when I am running. Also, as a coach, I would not want to get my runners uniforms back if they dont wear underwear. Had one runner last year turn them in and they had shit stains all over them on the inside!! So, even if you are comfortable with them, why would you want to run in shorts that get sooooo damn nasty!!!!

I find that most running shorts were apparently designed for somebody that has monster private parts. I realize it's cool for all of us to claim we "fill our shorts" just fine but if I'm using the liner the shorts came with I often have to roll up the waistband once or just wear it up near my navel. Those things are WAY too baggy. This is not always the case. I have some shorts by new balance that fit just fine.

I recently wore through the liner in one of my older shorts and rather than throw them away I just cut out the liner like other folks have mentioned and started wearing a pair of bikini briefs underneath. No complaints. Great support. I'd almost be willing to say I prefer that to the liners in the other shorts that feel really loose especially on cold runs.

I wear Gary's bikini briefs under my running shorts. My privates are the size of an acorn normally and when I race

they shrivel up into a little thing that looks like a raisin.

for me, it is the chaffing at the tip that gets me... so much bouncing around goes on, if i dont have support my tipper is in serious trouble. got to keep the tip in good shape... so it means i have to wear briefs under the running shorts.

I usually will wear nike running shorts, the short kind made for serious running. I never have to wear anything, the liner works just fine. I'll second that Adidas makes some pretty shitty liners. I'll wear tighty whiteys with running tights, but more often I'll just wear running shorts under my pants.

Take a look at any elite or olympic runner, they're never wearing underwear.

if you wear real running shorts you should be fine. I have big balls (no joke, I am like a bull) and I rarely have a problem. Especially since running seems to make everything shrivel up a bit down there).

Sometimes my older shorts have to go, I think the heat from the dryer causes the liner to shrink and then i've got all kinds of seepage coming out the sides, this can cause some nasty ball chafing, especially when running in the rain or in really hot weather.

I had a pair of adidas shorts that my junk kept falling out of! I threw them away and now run only in nike shorts, I have never had a problem with those.

I also had an adidas brand swimsuit that my junk would fall out of, switched to speedo.. no nore franks and beans.

First, my answer: I always wear briefs for running. Apparently the same as many guys here, I find there is just not enough support in the liner of running shorts, and I've had countless pairs in different brands. I agree that with a new pair of shorts with a proper liner your junk shouldn't be able to fall out, but the flopping is just too much for me.

Second, an unfortunate tale: Before I adopted my hard-line pro-brief stance, I was once out for a run (briefless) and bumped into a girl I'd been eying, who was just starting a run. (Not a crazy coincidence at all since we lived close by and had actually met in a class at the local gym.) It was a major bonus for me, and I was pretty excited when she asked me to join her. Normally with this amazing girl I might been worried about pitching a tent, but it was not an issue that day thanks to a cold breeze and light rain - shrinkage was already in full effect. So we had a nice run, chatting about work, running, etc. By the time we were headed back toward home, it was pouring rain, and while we laughed about all the people staring as we ran in the storm, my shorts were quickly forming a tight clingy bundle around my pathetically constricted package. I was really paranoid that she would see this situation, and I kept trying to hang back and lift the fabric off of my junk, but the cloth was wet and heavy and of course kept going right back two seconds later. Anyway, when I dropped her off at her place I was desperately trying to cover myself while we chatted and said goodbye. She actually said she was sorry if she was going too fast (she was a 4h+ marathon jogger and this was right after my time in college xc/track). I obviously couldn't give the real reason for my erratic pace, so I just told her no problem, she was strong out there, etc. Finally, she goes for this joking overhead two-handed high five as she goes inside, and I have basically no choice but to join in. I swear to god that as we high-fived thunder and lightening struck. She looked down and the shrink-wrapped package that was my ice-cold, shriveled dink wrapped in soaking three-inch shorts and said only "oh my god" before looking embarrassed and running inside. I hammered the mile or so home in a blind rage at the rain, at the shorts, at everything. We never spoke of the shrunken package again, but somehow after that emasculating incident I never quite had the smoothness and confidence to make a move on here after that. Years later, I am sharing this story for the first time. Thank you, letsrun.

It is funny how many self reported "big packages" there are - but every track and xc team that i have been around has been populated by a bunch of guys with twigs and berries.
