Addy looked great yesterday and sounded confident in her post-race interview. But a four second difference in (recent) PRs is massive. Keely would have to get tripped to lose. If Addy stays poised and out of trouble, she's got a great shot at a medal. Hope she grabs one.
I know it would be a long shot. That is my slim “but what if” hope. I hope Addy does go in planning to challenge and not be intimidated by Keely. That is the only way US women are going to have any chance on the world stage. There are finally some going to world events that want more than just to be there.
If Keely goes 1:55 pace trying to challenge her would most likely mean not getting a medal. That would be stupid, not brave.
Green was making too many moves getting to the front then getting spit out to the back.
That last lap the US could have used Hocker’s kick. Just saying.
Reminder that Hocker didn't make the 1500 team. His kick fresh would've been great, but he showed at USAs that after a hard 3k, he couldn't keep up with Green's kick. 6th in the world is a great result from Green, who is in his first year as a pro, and I don't think we can say Hocker (in the 2nd half of a double) would've done better. Now the worst of the UW trio may be Waskom, who I thought might be the best after making the US team as, like, a sophomore or something. Houser already snagged a medal, and Green was 6th today. Not to put down Waskom, I don't see why he couldn't do it either, just using him as a reference point.
I don't care to read about anything that anybody did wrong in that race. Garcia was supreme today. He just flat out won. It would have taken a very special performance to beat what he did.

3rd-6th were very evenly matched. Green tried to make the right moves but ultimately Spencer beat him out to the best position when it mattered even though Spencer was on the rail.

He's only run 1:48 this season. How did he run so well in the 1500? He doesn't have supreme 3000 strength either
Well, you’re the same bitter poofter who created the thread claiming Pattison will humiliate Cooper in the 800m final, and then Pattison went right out and choked, and now will have to yell from the stands to insult Cooper.
I’m only following the live results, but there’s no mistaking this: the story of that race is Garcia boldly doing what nobody thought he was capable of.
Last 800: 1:48.28. From 1000 to 1400 he split 52.88. Just burned everyone.
An 800m guy allowed to run from the front in a ~3:40 type race is a recipe for disaster. Huge blunder by Nader to not put in a few 29pts early.
Yeah exactly. I thought this performance was totally out of left field at first, but on visiting his WA profile it’s not unbelievable. They jogged the first 500 and then Garcia was able to run the last K in 2:18.71, when he has 2:16.25i and 2:16.40i early season clockings on his resume. I do think it’s the most impressive race of his career though.
For those not familiar, Mariano Garcia was world indoor champion in the 800 in 2022, European 800 champion outdoors later that year (over a top form Jake Wightman), and ran a 1:43.62 PB last summer. He’s 28 and his 1500 PB is “only” 3:35.53, but it looks like that could change soon and he might be able to reinvent himself as a regular wildcard in championship 1500s.

In the same manner as late career Lewandowski perhaps

I don't think they just ALLOWED IT. He started turning up the pace after 600, and after 900 was straight up flying. would have taken a braver than typical move to go by him.

Good post.
One might say that HOCKER could have used Hocker's kick in the WIC 3000 and USATF 1500.
Garcia's 3:35 1500 m PB was run in February. He has run very few outdoors 1500s and even those were in low-key races. If he is in a fast 1500 m next summer, I expect him to run close to 3:30 if not under.

That’s a split from his 1K. He’s been prepping for the 1500. Garcia has always been a handful when he gets it right tactically. You can’t let him control a race or blast by you with under 300 to go. He doesn’t come back. But if you make him work early or have to make multiple moves he can unravel.

Actually he hasn’t raced any 800s this year: that 1:48 is a split time from a 2:16.4 K.

I see what you mean but in the first few laps this is why Hocker/Kessler/Nuguse are happy to lead. You do not want to set the table for a complete jog that benefits a runner like Garcia. If you don’t address that you have to get by the leader if it’s Garcia/Attaoui/someone of that style. Nader paid the price for thinking he could kick by any leader off any pace.
Entirely too much time between events, and unfortunately I blame field events. Just have races rolling to fit a tight schedule and it would be such a better spectacle.
