DeHaven showed up to the Belle Fourche Rodeo Days 10K last July 4th. I think there were maybe 20 runners total. He ran right around 34 flat I think. It's a tough little course, but I think he was going pretty easy. I didn't feel so bad about my 37 from a couple of years earlier after that.
Another Rod DeHaven moment:
At the 2001 Heart of the Hills 10.4 Miler, he showed up and politely dusted the field by about 7 minutes. It was kind of funny, because starts fairly flat and straight and then makes about a 180 degree turn up a very large hill. All of this was in the first mile, which was the last time anybody saw DeHaven--going up that hill--until the finish line. Me and some college buddies gave chase, but ended up toast, all placing 2-6.
Still fun to race him. He trained out in the Black Hills all the time and would show up to lot of races, much like the Belle Fourche thing. Just very random. Also, runners from the University of Colorado used to run the Mystic Mountain 8 Miler in mid-July, back in the late 80's up to about the mid-90's. They've changed the course many times, and I believe Adam Goucher still has the older and tougher course record.
