A DQ call can happen with or without a protest. Umpires would indicate a potential foul, referee would send it for video review.
Realistically, meets at this level review EVERYTHING on video, yellow flags or not. We’re trained to at minimum make a call on anything that elicits a crowd response.
Big fail: there should have been an immediate hold on the results, pending review. TV always pushes us to instantaneously approve the outcome. Someone should have said, no we need to look further, and we will not confirm qualifiers until we’re sure. Not fair to the American or the German to switch results an hour later.
Be great to have some better videos so we can all dissect them and come to widely different conclusions depending on our biases.
That said, if you were watching this live, you couldn't miss what Hocker did and immediately think that he was probably going to get a DQ.
I watched it live and was immediately concerned he would get DQed. He was panicking and made a move to sneak through the gap and it looked like the German runner was impeded since he fell back significantly immediately afterwards. After seeing more angles of it and slowed down, I actually think Hocker barely touched him and got through the gap pretty cleanly. Don't think it's DQ worthy. I see much more significant contact that that all the time in 1500m races.

they don't need to hold results. Everybody knows a potential DQ is coming. And if they don't know, they should.
Jakob has pulled a lot of crap over the years and never ultimately been DQd for it. I can recall at least one instance where he was initially DQd and then reinstated.
Brits and Euros run this sport (this rotten, corrupt, hypocritical sport) and they run it for their own benefit.
I am not familiar with the particulars of contact in middle distance racing, what in particular makes that a DQ, from the front angle it looks like he kind of just slips through the gap without impeding either runner on the left or right.
The front angle is misleading. The live feed showed that he was clearly behind Farken, pushes his right arm in front of the German to fashion a gap and then pushes through. Racing allows natural ‘racing incidents’ but not physically impeding another to gain an advantage.
And Hocker always does the same thing. He hugs the rail and categorically refuses to swing out wide and overtake. He always wants to run the shortest distance.
If you do that, you risk getting boxed. That happened today and he panicked.
That clip does not show whether or not Hocker did what you described.
The live BBC feed showed it perfectly.
I said he’s getting DQed immediately. Not even sure what the fuss is about. About as obvious a DQ as you can get.
I immediately thought DQ and a completely bullcrap move. Go back and watch 2016… 450 to go Centro’s move was similar, but on the rail (not between two runners) and he slipped by. Cole pushed through two runners and jostled them badly. Clearly a DQ. Cole was screwed as soon as he gave up the lead.
Nope. Cole impeded very clear. The call was the correct one. Devastating for Cole and USA track fans but Cole has to accep the consequences of his decision even in the heat of the race. I doubt he will ever try this move again.
What is the specific language of the rule that he was DQed for? I’ve always liked the saying “rubbings racing” and it didn’t appear very egregious to my untrained eye. There are dozens of little bumps and hand checks throughout these 1500 semis. But of course, if he violated a rule a DQ is justified.
