So one of the things T&F has a hard time grappling with is the reality of false doping positives. It's a hard thing to believe, but statistically, a false doping positive is a certainty.
Look, no one can every be 100% sure about Shelby, but if there ever was a almost certainty of a false doping positive it is Shelby.
1. She was in the Jerry's Nike group. No culture of doping in that group.
2. Nandralone is just such a stupid drug to take if you want to avoid a positive. It stays in your system forever, it's easily detected and it doesn't help distance running much. It just doesn't make sense why she would take it in the year of 2020.
3. She wouldn't even wear early edition super spikes because she felt they were cheating. That's how hardcore she was.
4. Dig into her WADA hearings and testimony. I believe she got hosed, or at very least presented a bad bit of evidence. Especially the expert testimony from WADA.
5. She was dating Matt Centrowitz at the time and he lived with her. He vouched for her no doping. By transitive properties, believing Shelby is a doper is like believeing Matt C is a doper. And I really don't believe Matt C is a doper.
6. I worked in low-level organic contaminant analytical detection. False positives are just part of life. As a chemist you like to believe that you are always 100% correct, but really analytical chemistry relies on statistics and confidence intervals. No test is ever 100% correct, it is 99% correct or whatever you choose as your subjective measure of uncertainty. This means that randomly, one test will appear positive.
I'm really Happy for Shelby actually. Her 5K win is honestly one of the better distance running performances in a while. How many athletes in the past 20 years have won a national championship with no sponsors and no support. She is basically an amateur out there, which makes her win more impressive.
